Have you ever played with a baby? A newborn will either eat, cry, sleep or play. Sometimes, they will wake up be hungry so you have to feed them. Sometimes, they will wake up and be scared or have a dirty diaper so they will cry. And sometimes they will wake up wonderfully refreshed and just want to play and hang out. You never really know how the baby will go from sleeping to crying to eating to playing, but you can guess. And your guesses get better, the more you learn about the baby.
