Brute force I tried to go forward starting from each character, instead of going character by charecter down the string and checking symmetrically back and forth from that character as starting point. I just kept digging myself deeper and deeper. Of course, in reality one would be able to consult reference texts or at least sleep on a problem unless in a panic crisis.
