I did not give an amount explaining that (1) I just moved to the area from out of state and was not yet familiar with the market, (2) I was open to negotiation and wanted to hear their offer, (3) I asked how much they had budgeted for the position - I was not given an answer, and (4) I explained that my salary needs would depend on the details of the job description - it was a brand new position and the details were not yet fully established. Most importantly, (5) I explained that money was not my primary motivation for seeking the job, rather that I had years of experience in that particular line of work, that I loved it and was extremely good at it, and was excited to join a company that shared my values, was progressive and forward thinking, and growing rapidly.
