With A/B test, you manipulate the design element you would want to test, keeping all else equal. Then randomly assigning users to each of the treatment groups, measuring the desired outcome variable. Since the only difference is in the manipulated design element, you can claim a causal relationship between the change in the design and the difference in behavior.
