How would you handle an angry customer?

I would try and get the view point of the customer and see what the issue is that is causing him or her to be irate and then find a solution that is favorable to the customer. During this process maintain a smile and be respectful. If I cannot find a solution refer the customer to upper management. If possible speak with the customer privately.
