Name a time when you had a problem with a customer, what did you do?

When I worked at the hardware store in college, a woman had come in with a light bulb. She had bought this about 3 years prior, and it had a 5 year warranty on it. It was now burnt out, she had her receipt, and she wanted a new light bulb. I tried to explain to her that the warranty was through the manufacturer and not the store, so it was not our responsibility to replace it and she would have to call the customer service number on the box. We didn’t even carry the particular light bulb in the store for me to give her another one. She couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t replace it for her, so I told her I would help her resolve the problem. I called the customer service number for her and spoke to a representative confirming that the light bulb didn’t work. They said that she needed to mail the barcode, her address and phone number and the receipt to be able to get a new light bulb. So I took her receipt into the back office and made a copy, cut the barcode off of the box and wrote her information on a note card. I placed this all in an envelope for her and addressed it to the manufacturer, and told her all she needed was a stamp and to put it in her mailbox to get the replacement light bulb. She left ecstatic and happy that I helped her as much as I did.
