Although this question is not technically illegal, I would never have asked something like this when I was interviewing. It can lead to an inappropriate and possibly even an illegal conversation. I also was a bit uncomfortable with this question, because it was irrelevant to the job, and it is none of my prospective employer's business what I like to do in my free time. I did answer, but again, I thought it was inappropriate.
