Diversity is important in the workplace, especially in retail, because having a diverse workforce will make customers feel like they are in a welcoming and accepting environment. As a customer, when you walk into a place of business such as a retail store, being able to identify with someone who looks like you, talks like you, or comes from a similar background as you gives you a feeling of comfort that you wouldn’t experience in a place that lacks diversity. Trying on clothes and changing your look can be an extremely intimate experience and all companies should do what they can to add to the comfort of their customers.
