I disagree that the above is the 'best mental math approach'. One should do: 40^2-2*3*40+9=1600-240+9=1369

Best mental math approach here is to: 37 * 37 = (40-3) * (40-3) = 40 *(40-3) - 3 * 37 = 40^2 - 40*3 - 37*3 = 1600 - 120 - 111 = 1600 - 231 = 1369.
