Cormac McCarthy's The Road -- masterclass in evocative imagery/diction and brevity. The book also underscores that although love cannot prevent death, it is one of the few things that can give us the best odds of surviving in a senseless world. I didn't say this last part because it was kind of morbid for a job interview, but it's something that's important to me personally.
