Ok.. a manhole cover is circular. a pothole cover is usually a slab of metal that is either rectangular or square, and rarely, if ever ever circular.

This is a prime example of 'stop and think' before answering the question. Some would see 'pot hole cover' but only process 'hole cover'. You may blurt out an actual reason for the cover being round before realizing you saw the word 'pot hole'. It's one of those 'kick yourself later' scenerios.
