POSITION SUMMARY

Provide nursing services to youth in the Youth Crisis and Recovery Center (YCRC) program. Nursing services include, but are not limited to: initial admission assessments, development and implementation of a nursing plan of care for mental health needs, health screenings, urine drug screens, wellness education and counseling (group and individual), monitoring symptoms of illness or injury, monitoring youth who may be experiencing the aftereffects of drug use, medication administration and management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide medical/nursing assessment of youth being admitted to the Youth Crisis and Recovery Center.
• Provide concise, thorough documentation of all interactions with youth and families, or interactions with other providers on the youth’s behalf in the agency’s electronic health record.
• Maintain medication administration record and ensure accuracy of staff administering medication.
• Ensure medications are organized and stored securely.
• Prompt completion of all clinical documentation of patient contacts in the agency’s EHR system.
• Work as part of an integrated treatment team collaborating with the individual served, family members or others they want involved in their treatment and other treatment team members (internal and external) to help support the individual in their treatment and recovery.
• Provide services that are recovery oriented and person and family centered, utilizing a strengths-based approach.
• Provide services to meet the whole health needs of individuals served.
• Utilize appropriate assessment instruments to help monitor the progress of individuals served and ensure necessary services are received in the appropriate intensity and duration.
• Utilize Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) as appropriate.
• Assess the nursing needs of the Youth Crisis and Recovery program.
• Maintain the Heartstart Defibrillator and associated supplies and assist in education/protocols for its use.
• Conduct nursing visits with clients billing 99211 as appropriate and directed by Director of Youth Psychiatry, Chief Medical Officer or Nurse Manager of YCRC (RN only)
• Coordinate schedules with coworkers, so that the nursing office has adequate coverage.
• Maintain effective operations of the nursing office.
• Maintain nursing supplies and first aid kits, ensuring out of date supplies are appropriately removed/disposed of, and necessary supplies are available when needed.
• Attend staff or administrative meetings as required.
• Coordinate and assist with nursing school students to meet learning objectives as directed by Director of Youth Psychiatry or Nurse Manager of YCRC.

Other Duties

• Acts as an ambassador of the agency in the community setting, which may include doing public educational and informational presentations.

• Other duties as assigned, as qualified and trained for.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Licensed as RN or LPN with psychiatric and substance use treatment experience preferred.
• Familiarity with psychotropic medications is required.
• Experience with children and adolescents preferred.
• Must be trained in Case Management techniques.
• Successful completion of Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), Central Registry, and other applicable background investigations.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, current auto insurance and reliable transportation.
• Must have sufficient ambulatory capabilities to work with children/youth in the office.
• Requires the physical ability to restrain children and adolescents exhibiting out of control behaviors using MAB protocol.

Other Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to work in an intermittently high stress environment and handle a variety of works tasks simultaneously. The position involves working in a two-story facility with patient care units located on both floors. While an elevator is available, employees must be able to navigate stairs as needed based on patient care, emergencies, or operational requirements. At times the children/youth express themselves by verbal or physical acting out. Restraining acting out youth using MAB protocol is a possible occurrence.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Fast paced working environment requiring moving between two floors, three patient care units and interacting with a multidisciplinary team. Frequent use of the keyboard and personal computer and/or speaking on the phone. This is also a direct service position with frequent interruptions. At times the children/youth express themselves by verbal or physical acting out. Restraining acting out youth is a possible occurrence.
