What Is the CARS Section?

The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section is the only non-science section of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). In 90 minutes, students read dense passages drawn from the humanities and social sciences (e.g., philosophy, ethics, sociology, art, history) and answer complex questions about the author's key arguments and support. Every answer is supported entirely by the passage itself; no outside knowledge is required. It's closely related to the reading and reasoning sections on the LSAT, GRE, and SAT.

Position Summary

Jack Westin built its reputation on CARS instruction, and our CARS Strategy Course is widely regarded as the most effective CARS-specific prep available. We're looking for personable, experienced instructors with CARS, LSAT, SAT, or other verbal-reasoning teaching backgrounds to join our Live MCAT Instruction team.

Your primary role will be to teach our CARS Strategy Course, a guarantee-backed course built entirely around the CARS section. You'll coach students to apply Jack Westin's CARS strategy toolkit to real passages in real time. Additional opportunities for private tutoring, video solution filming, and written content creation are available for strong candidates.

You'll need a strong background in English, literary studies, or verbal reasoning, and a willingness to learn and teach a detailed strategy system. Because our training is intensive and our methodology is specific, we especially value instructors open to a long-term commitment (2–3 years).

What You'll Do

• Teach Jack Westin's CARS strategies: help students learn to apply and master our strategy toolkit without sacrificing high-quality, encouraging support.
• Lead the CARS Strategy Course: our guarantee-backed, CARS-focused course. This is the core of the role: teaching live course sessions that build students' CARS skills through strategy instruction and live passage work.
• Additional Opportunities: for qualified and interested candidates. This is optional work that opens the door to additional paid opportunities.
• Provide CARS-specific tutoring: mentor students 1:1 to help them achieve their goals.
• Lead the weekly CARS Workshop and CARS Office Hours: one of each is held each week. Workshops are live passage breakdowns where students unmute to read a paragraph or answer a question aloud and receive real-time feedback; Office Hours address student-submitted questions and support students who are struggling with the CARS section.
• Help build our CARS content: write CARS practice questions, create written solutions, and film video breakdowns.
• Contribute to CARS training materials and quality-review initiatives as needed.

What Makes a Strong Candidate?

Strong CARS instructors are exceptional readers and communicators who can break down a complex passage and make their reasoning visible to students. They're willing to master and teach our defined strategy system for critical thinking. Instructors who've taught the LSAT, GRE, or SAT reading and reasoning sections often find the transition natural.

Qualifications

Required — one of the following:

• 95th percentile or above on the MCAT CARS section, or
• 95th percentile or above on the LSAT, or
• An advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in English or a related field, or
• Demonstrated top-percentile performance and teaching experience in a comparable verbal-reasoning or reading section (e.g., SAT, GRE)

Also required:

• Classroom teaching experience, three years minimum

Preferred:

• Experience teaching or tutoring for standardized exams
• Past experience with the MCAT
• Interest in or experience tutoring reading comprehension and critical thinking
• Interest in or experience writing practice questions, passages, and answer explanations, or filming video solutions

Compensation & Benefits

• $50.00–$70.00 per hour
