Position Summary
The primary role of the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is to provide direct and support services to female or male clients suffering from mental illness or a co-occurring disorder. Specifically, the two main functions of the BHT are 1) supervision of the clients and 2) ensuring their participation in treatment-related services and facilitating psycho-educational activities of daily living and attending community support and recreational activities. This role is for the overnight shifts.
Shifts are either 7pm-7am 3 days/week or 7pm-7am 4 days/week.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in supervision of client activities and is aware of clients' whereabouts at all times, including breaks and internal activities.
- Attends all mandatory training and in-house conferences/seminars.
- Engages clients in therapeutic activities as appropriate.
- Provides a brief overview of the housing program in regard to program rules, procedures, and services with each new client.
- Maintains order and ensures compliance with rules and regulations; ensures that clients conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
- Monitors and documents clients for signs of medical distress and/or behavioral concerns on an ongoing basis.
- Provides appropriate support and structure for clients in dealing with their recovery; interacts continually with clients.
- Ensures client wake-up and bedtime, escorts residents on shopping trips, recreation, meetings, medical appointments, etc.
- Enforces program rules at all times.
- Distributes daily mail to clients and observes confidentiality standards.
- Records accurate and up-to-date reports on every client and continually updates the bed list(s) to ensure that all admissions and discharges are recorded in a timely fashion.
- Reports to the supervisor of any discrepancies in the client's whereabouts.
- Responds appropriately to all medical and other emergencies.
- When assigned to drive Company vehicles, BHTs are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the vehicles.
- Conducts search of all client bags when being admitted to the facility. Confiscates and secures any contraband found and notifies the appropriate supervisor on duty in their absence.
- Randomly inspects all rooms, common areas, hallways, and bathrooms every thirty minutes and performs a thorough search for contraband, no less than weekly.

- Identifies and responds appropriately to clients who are suicidal, aggressive, or hostile. Reports potential risks and behaviors of concern to clinical supervisors
- Conducts routine checks and rounds to monitor residents’ location, behavior, and mental status
- Assists residents with self-administration of prescribed medications
- Engages with individuals using trauma-sensitive language and approaches. Minimizes re-traumatization by ensuring safety, trust, and choice
- Safely transports residents to appointments, outings, or program activities
- Recognizes and reports suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation in accordance with California law. Understands internal incident reporting protocols
- Understands the facility’s disaster and emergency response procedures
- Understands the purpose and process of CLIA-waived testing.
Minimum Qualifications

All direct care staff shall have graduated from high school or possess a GED and have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience, or its part-time equivalent, working in a program serving persons with mental disabilities. Such experience must be in the direct provision of services to clients. If the employee does not have the required experience, the program shall document a specific plan of supervision and in-service training for the employee which will guarantee the ongoing qualification of the employee to perform the job. The plan should include, but not be limited to, the frequency and number of hours of training, the subjects to be covered, and a description of the supervision to be provided.
- High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must have a required health screening
- Must have a current Tuberculin Screen or obtain upon 7 days of hire.
- Valid CPR/First Aid Certification
- Must have criminal record clearance
- Must be able to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and flexible hours.
- Must have a valid class B license.

- Personal experience being a consumer of mental health services.
- Ability to read and interpret written information; write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; and participates in meetings.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Walking, bending, and kneeling, which may occur with long periods of sitting in a vehicle while transporting; must be able to participate in moderate lifting of 30 or more pounds (suitcases, packages, etc.). This position must be able to support client weight in case of an emergency situation or client disability requiring assistance in walking, etc. There is a risk of exposure to bodily fluid infections, contagious / blood borne diseases, and chemicals (cleaning agents), an exposed risk to highway accidents, and an exposed risk to varying, unpredictable situations (i.e., client behavior).
