New Berlin Plastics is looking for an experienced Automation Engineer who thrives at the intersection of engineering design, controls programming, and hands-on implementation.

This isn’t a role for someone who only designs systems or only writes code. We’re searching for an engineer who can design automation solutions, program and troubleshoot controls, and then roll up their sleeves to bring those solutions to life on the manufacturing floor.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role?

Design It.

You have strong CAD skills and can design automation systems, robotic work cells, end-of-arm tooling, electrical layouts, and production improvements using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar software.

Program It.

You possess a solid electrical and controls background with experience programming PLCs, integrating robotics, troubleshooting electrical systems, and developing automation solutions that improve safety, quality, and productivity.

Build It.

You’re not afraid to get your hands dirty. You enjoy working directly on the plant floor, installing equipment, debugging systems, supporting production, and seeing projects through to successful implementation.

Key Responsibilities

· Design, develop, and implement automation systems, including electrical panel layouts, PLC programming, documentation, and training materials.

· Build and integrate robotic work cells, end-of-arm tooling, and vision systems.

· Program and integrate six-axis and Cartesian robots, including Star Automation, Universal Robots, or similar platforms.

· Develop, install, and validate machine vision systems.

· Lead troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause analysis of automation equipment failures.

· Collaborate with Engineering and Production teams on equipment specifications, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

· Create and maintain CAD drawings and technical documentation.

· Train technicians and operators on automation equipment and processes.

· Support preventive maintenance initiatives and equipment reliability programs.

· Ensure all automation systems comply with applicable safety and regulatory standards.

Qualifications Required

· Associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Automation/Mechatronics, or equivalent experience.

· Minimum 5 years of industrial automation experience, preferably within injection molding manufacturing.

· Proficiency in design using CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Pro-E, or similar).

· Strong knowledge of electrical design and troubleshooting (panels, circuits, sensors, PLC).

· Proficiency in writing PLC programming and industrial electrical systems.

· Knowledge of robotics, vision systems, sensors, and safety system integration.

· Strong troubleshooting skills involving electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.

· Excellent project management, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred

· Experience with Star Automation Robots.

· Experience with Universal Robots.

· Experience with Keyence or Cognex Vision Systems.

· Knowledge of NEC, IEC, OSHA, and other applicable automation standards.

Pay: $83,639.23 - $100,726.82 per year
