Construction Supervisor

Reports To: Construction Director

Job Summary:

The Construction Supervisor manages daily field operations at assigned HFHRV build sites, ensuring quality workmanship, productive volunteer engagement, and on-time completion of each construction phase. Working under the functional direction of the Construction Directror, the incumbent is the hands-on leader present on site each build day, directing the work, subcontractors, and volunteers, and maintaining a safe and organized job site. The Construction Supervisor is the most visible representative of HFHRV’s values on the build site, setting the tone for volunteers and future homeowners.

Example Responsibilities

The following are examples of the Construction Supervisor’s responsibilities. Tasks and priorities may differ at times, at the department Director’s discretion, based on HFHRV’s needs.

Construction Site Management:

· Executes builds according to approved site schedules, plans, and specifications, ensuring each phase meets HFHRV’s quality and construction standards.

· Manages daily construction site operations, including task delegation, work sequencing, and on-site decision-making within the approved scope of work (SOW).

· Performs and directs hands-on construction work across phases as needed, modeling proper technique and quality for volunteers and assistants.

Volunteer Oversight and Engagement

· Communicates with the Project Manager, Construction Director and Volunteer Manager to plan and align volunteer groups with day-to-day work requirements.

· Conducts daily safety briefings and orients volunteers to the site, the day’s tasks, tools and safe work practices (including OSHA and company policies), assigns task appropriate for skills, trains and directs proper tools and techniques.

· Assigns work appropriate for volunteer and homeowner skills and abilities, and provides supervision and encouragement to ensure productive, positive, safe experiences.

Subcontractor and Trade Coordination

· Coordinates the on-site work of subcontractors and trades, ensuring tasks are completed to quality standards and properly sequenced with volunteer labor.

· Ensures subcontractor site access, coordinates and communicates daily schedules, and deconflicts competing work, escalating issues to the Project Manager and Construction Director as needed.

· Verifies that subcontractor work is completed to quality standards, meets specifications, and is ready for inspection before dependent phases begin.

Materials and Logistics

· Maintains an accurate on-site inventory and properly stages materials to support day-to-day work, while ensuring limited excess materials on site.

· Checks whether supplies are available from HFHRV’s central inventory, assures they are picked up and delivered, and updates the inventory as necessary.

· Coordinates with the Project Manager to order materials, facilitates delivery logistics, and escalates availability and delivery issues to ensure appropriate supplies are available.

Safety and Quality

· Maintains a clean, safe, and organized job site at all times, and continuously enforces site safety practices among staff, volunteers, and subcontractors.

· Identifies and corrects safety hazards and quality issues promptly, escalating significant concerns to the Project Manager and Construction Director.

· Performs daily work quality reviews and ensures workmanship issues are addressed, and coordinates internal and external (e.g., city, county) inspections.

Reporting and Communication

· Maintains accurate records of progress, safety incidents and corrective actions, inventory drawdowns, deliveries, inspections, change requests, etc. at assigned sites.

· Regularly reports site progress, issues and resolutions, and labor and material needs to the Project Manager, participates in team meetings, etc.

· Participates in project closeout meetings and attends homeowner “handover” events for assigned sites, as appropriate.

ExperienceMinimum Requirements

· Three years of hands-on residential construction experience

· One year leading and supervising others across multiple construction phases

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Valid driver’s license

Beneficial Qualifications

· Familiarity with the Habitat model and/or prior work with another volunteer-based builder

· Experience leading or teaching volunteers or crews of mixed skills levels

· Trade certification or vocational training in a construction discipline

· OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certifications, or willingness to obtain

· Certification in First Aid and/or CPR

Additional Job Specifications

This position is primarily field-based at active build sites in and around the City of Roanoke. Most of the work is outdoor. The incumbent must have reliable transportation to travel to/from HFHRV facilities, work sites, public offices, etc. The position requires heavy lifting and may also require operation of vehicles used to transport materials, operate on site, etc.
