• The duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Assemble, disassemble, clean and reassemble various instruments and equipment of varying complexity.
• Ensure all equipment and materials required for laboratory testing are prepared and available.
• Prepares routine statistical reports for supervisory review.
• Oversee and participate in laboratory and field activities to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with procedures.
• Provide recommendation reports to supervisory staff, identifying operational issues and proposing corrective actions.
• Submit detailed reports on special tests and assigned projects.
• Maintain quarterly inventory of departmental equipment and track weekly consumption levels.
• Order supplies, materials, and other resources needed to support laboratory operations.
• Follow all safety instructions, policies, and procedures; monitor the work area for safety hazards and report concerns promptly.

• Laboratory workers frequently lift and carry objects weighing from 10 to 30 pounds.
• The work requires continuous walking, standing, or sitting and considerable arm and hand movements to operate equipment and do preparation work.
• Special safety precautions are required and the incumbent uses protective gear such as laboratory coats, safety aprons, different types of gloves, safety glasses, and goggles.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must show you have had training and experience of sufficient scope and quality to provide you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Your answers to the vacancy specific questions must be supported by the work experience in your resume. You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or job elements:

• Ability to perform laboratory support work without more than normal supervision
• Work practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)

• If education is required or you are using education to qualify, you must submit a copy of your college transcripts. • If claiming veterans' preference, you must submit a DD214, Certificate of Release from Active Duty, which shows dates of service and discharge under honorable conditions. If currently on active duty you must submit a certification of expected discharge or release from active duty service under honorable conditions within 120 days after the date the certification is submitted. The certification must be on the letterhead of the appropriate military branch and include the dates of military service. Veterans' preference must be verified prior to appointment. Without this documentation, you will not receive veteran's preference and your application will be evaluated based on the material(s) submitted.

• Surplus or displaced employees eligible for CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP priority must provide: proof of eligibility (RIF separation notice, notice of proposed removal for declining a transfer of function or directed reassignment to another commuting area, notice of disability annuity termination), SF-50 documenting separation (as applicable), last performance appraisal that is at least fully successful or its equivalent, and your most recent SF-50 noting position, grade level, and duty location with your application per 5 CFR 330.

  • Disability Annuity Termination: Notification from OPM of disability annuity termination AND Separation SF-50 of the last position held.
