Qualifications:
This course introduces environmental studies through an interdisciplinary, social-science-focused lens, exploring how human societies and the planetary environment shape one another. Students will build conceptual tools to examine diverse theories, methods, and normative approaches that inform environmental scholarship, activism, and policy across global and local scales.

Students will analyze key environmental issues-including climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, pollution, environmental injustice, and the global plastics crisis-with a strong focus on the perspectives and interests of oppressed and marginalized populations. Coursework pairs diverse readings (scientific journals, philosophy, literature, and news) with reflective writings and discussions connecting course topics to personal experiences.

This course is geared toward students considering environmental studies as a major, but also other students who are curious about environmental issues and would like to develop a better understanding of social, cultural and political dimensions of environmental problems. For students intending to major in EES, this course should help develop a better sense of their interests as they choose between the sciences or the studies tracks.

This lecture will be taught on the Moraga campus in person during the 2026 Fall term (August 31, 2026 - December 20, 2026) on TTH from 11:40 - 12:55 pm.

In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.

Candidates must have a Master's or Ph.D. degree preferred in a relevant area of Environmental or Earth Science discipline and a successful record of teaching experience in a related field at the undergraduate level. Preference will be given to those who have previously taught the course or EES 90 or EES 92.

Candidates must reside in California.

The salary range for this position is $7,447 - $10,308 (3 units) and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
