Under direct supervision, performs a variety of support tasks in public sector civil engineering; performs related duties as required.

Class Characteristics
The Engineering Aide is a multiple position hourly classification which assists professional engineers with a variety of routine support functions and provides exposure for career advancement into public sector civil engineering.

Works under the direct supervision of professional level engineering staff.

Does not supervise. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Prepares and issues permits for public works improvements; conducts related research.

Performs field inspections as required and prepares inspection reports.

Performs plan checks and related calculations.

Assists professional staff in preparation of plans and specifications and in surveying plan sites. Gathers and analyzes information and statistics; prepares cost estimates for projects; makes minor engineering calculations.

Drafts maps from topographic data and field notes; designs and prepares signs, presentation materials, etc.

Maintains a variety of files and records related to public works projects, including permits, maps and plans, and inspection reports. Updates and maintains drawings and plans for City facilities.

Provides technical assistance and information to the public in person, by computer, and by telephone. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice System
An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and Driver's License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.

• Written Examination (pass/fail): If a written exam is given, a minimum of 70% must be obtained on the written exam in order to be eligible to continue to the next phase of the selection process which will consist of an oral appraisal interview.
• Oral Appraisal Interview (100%): A minimum of 70% must be obtained to pass the oral appraisal interview. The top 10 qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the oral interview phase of the selection process.
• Employment Eligibility List: The Employment Eligibility List will be established after completion of the examination process. Current and future vacancies will be filled from this list. Lists typically last for 12 months, but may be extended or abolished in accordance with the City's Hiring Policy.
