Engineering Designer (Entry Level)
Conduit & Cable Routing – Large Power Transformers
Department: Engineering Group
Location: Pocatello, ID
Reports to: Lead, Mechanical Engineering
Education: Associate Degree Required
Position Summary
This entry-level Engineering Designer supports the mechanical engineering team in the design and development of conduit and cable routing systems for large power transformers. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, the successful candidate will develop 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, Bills of Materials, and routing layouts that comply with customer requirements, company standards, and applicable industry codes. The role offers an excellent opportunity for graduates with an Associate Degree to build a career in transformer engineering.
Primary Responsibilities
Conduit Routing Design
- Design conduit routing systems using Autodesk Inventor.
- Create accurate 3D models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Size conduits using NEC conduit fill requirements.
- Design conduit supports, clamps, brackets, and mounting hardware.
- Perform interference/clash detection and resolve routing conflicts.
- Modify conduit layouts to accommodate transformer design changes.
- Optimize routing for manufacturing efficiency, installation, and serviceability.
Cable Routing Design
- Design routing for control, instrumentation, RTD, CT/PT, fan, pump, and auxiliary cables.
- Interpret wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.
- Apply cable bend-radius, separation, and clearance requirements.
- Design cable trays, cable supports, and cable management systems.
- Ensure routing supports manufacturing, testing, shipping, and field installation.
Engineering Support
- Coordinate with Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, Quality, and Testing teams.
- Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and drawing revisions.
- Assist production with assembly questions and drawing clarification.
- Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement projects.
- Maintain controlled engineering documentation and CAD standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Mechanical Design Technology, CAD Technology, Drafting & Design Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
- 0–3 years of drafting or mechanical design experience (internships/co-ops acceptable).
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or equivalent 3D CAD software.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with heavy industrial or electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of conduit systems, cable routing, sheet metal, and fabrication drawings.
- Experience with ERP/PDM systems and BOM management.
- Knowledge of transformer construction, wiring diagrams, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
- Experience with 3D interference/clash detection.

Work Environment
Office-based engineering environment with regular interaction with manufacturing operations.
