The Quality Control (QC) Inspector is responsible for ensuring fabricated steel components meet company, customer, and industry quality standards. This role performs in-process and final inspections of fabricated parts, verifies conformance to blueprints and welding specifications, and works closely with production teams to ensure proper fit-up, welding quality, and dimensional accuracy.
A. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols.
- Inspect steel parts and assemblies for correct fit-up prior to welding.
- Verify dimensional accuracy using measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, squares, levels, micrometers, etc.).
- Inspect welds for size, location, and visual defects in accordance with applicable codes/specifications.
- Confirm materials, bolt sizes, hole locations, and part configurations match drawings.
- Perform in-process inspections throughout fabrication and final inspections prior to shipment.
- Document inspection results, non-conformances, and corrective actions.
- Coordinate with welders, fitters, and supervisors to resolve quality issues.
- Ensure compliance with company QA/QC procedures and customer requirements.
- Maintain inspection records, checklists, and traceability documentation.
- Support continuous improvement and rework reduction efforts.
B. ABILITIES
- Ability to read and interpret structural and/or miscellaneous steel fabrication drawings.
- Knowledge of welding symbols and basic weld inspection criteria.
- Experience checking fit-up and welded assemblies in a fabrication environment.
- Proficient with standard measuring and layout tools.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with shop personnel.
- Knowledge in FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and SAW welding processes.
C. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Education and Training – High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in structural steel or metal fabrication quality control.
- Current AWS QC1 Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)- Preferred
D. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work on the shop floor around fabrication equipment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in typical fabrication shop conditions (noise, dust, temperature variations).
