Position Summary
P&B Intermodal Services is seeking an experienced Area Operations Manager to lead and oversee intermodal container and chassis maintenance operations across multiple facilities within a designated region.
This position is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and profitable operations while delivering exceptional service to customers. The Area Operations Manager will provide leadership and support to terminal managers, supervisors, and maintenance teams, driving operational consistency, equipment availability, workforce development, and financial performance across all assigned locations.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in intermodal equipment maintenance, multi-site operations management, employee leadership, and customer relationship management.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and operational oversight for multiple intermodal container and chassis maintenance facilities.
- Ensure all locations operate safely and in compliance with company policies, customer requirements, OSHA regulations, DOT standards, and industry guidelines.
- Drive operational excellence by monitoring productivity, repair quality, equipment availability, and customer service performance.
- Lead, coach, and develop terminal managers, supervisors, technicians, and support personnel.
- Establish performance expectations and hold management teams accountable for operational and financial results.
- Conduct regular site visits, operational reviews, and safety audits to ensure consistency and compliance across all facilities.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including repair cycle times, labor productivity, quality metrics, safety performance, and equipment utilization.
- Manage regional operating budgets, labor costs, overtime, parts inventory, and capital expenditures.
- Develop staffing plans to support customer growth and operational demands.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, railroads, steamship lines, chassis providers, leasing companies, and terminal operators.
- Identify operational challenges and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency and profitability.
- Ensure accurate maintenance records, work orders, billing documentation, and operational reporting.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on strategic initiatives, growth opportunities, and continuous improvement programs.
- Support business development efforts by assisting with customer retention, contract implementation, and operational startups.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in intermodal operations, fleet maintenance, transportation, logistics, or heavy equipment maintenance.
- Proven success managing multiple facilities, terminals, or service locations.
- Strong understanding of intermodal container and chassis maintenance operations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead managers, supervisors, and large field teams.
- Experience managing budgets, labor costs, and operational performance metrics.
- Strong customer relationship and communication skills.
- Ability to analyze operational data and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Proficiency with maintenance management systems, Microsoft Office, and operational reporting tools.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned region.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with railroad, steamship line, chassis pool, or container leasing company operations.
- Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, UIIA, and intermodal industry requirements.
- Experience leading large-scale maintenance operations in a fast-paced environment.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
