General Description

Under direct supervision, performs a wide variety of duties involved in installing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading power lines.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

- Incumbent is responsible for driving equipment truck to work site. Truck may have reel or equipment trailers. Locates truck and/or trailer in appropriate work place.

- Assists lineman by operating such equipment as trenching machine or hydraulic derrick to provide for underground lines or to set and align poles and anchors. Uses trencher blade to cover ditches. Operates backhoe as required.

- Sets up reels and helps string or bury conductor.

- Helps install and remove transformers, switches, regulators and other electrical apparatus, does pre-assembly of apparatus on the ground for installation by linemen.

- Assists linemen on poles and installing underground conductors by sending material to linemen by hand lines or other equipment.

- Loads and unloads poles, transformers, etc. Makes certain that trucks are properly stocked and tools and equipment properly placed.

- Assists in retiring old lines and facilities and properly returning materials to warehouse.

- As required, conducts daily vehicle maintenance, checking for fluid levels, proper tire pressure and fluid leaks, adds fluids and/or air as needed. Reports malfunctions or repairs needed to appropriate authority.

- Attends periodical training sessions pertaining to safety, first aid, CPR and technical subjects.

- Is responsible for proper use and care of tools and equipment.

- Must maintain a valid commercial Driver’s License.

- Must be available for “on-call” duties, special trouble calls and overtime as required.

- With the mutual consent of the Power Commission authorities and the incumbent, the incumbent may be assigned to learn the duties of a lineman trainee and serviceman trainee.

- As a public employee is responsible for maintaining good relations with the public served.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

- Skillfully uses hand tools or machines needed for your work.

- Read blueprints or drawings of the items to be made or repaired.

- Measure, cut or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.

- Use arithmetic or shop geometry to figure amounts of materials needed.

- Picture what the finished product will look like.

- Accepts responsibility for the accuracy of the wok.

Physical Demands

Lifting 100 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Climbing. Balancing. Stooping. Kneeling. Crouching. Crawling. Reaching. Handling. Fingering. Feeling. Talking. Hearing. Seeing.

Environmental conditions

Outside: No effective protection from weather. A job is considered “outside” if the worker spends approximately 75 percent or more of the time outside. Hazards: situations in which the individual is exposed to the definite risk of bodily injury.

Math Skills

Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to: Add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, practical application or fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Must have developed language skills to the point to be able to: read and understand instructions, safety rules etc.
