Job Summary
The Project Engineer is a highly technical, hands-on role within the Project Management Department, responsible for scoping, designing, and implementing core technology solutions, configuring hardware and software, and resolving complex technical incidents. This position is responsible for a large variety of systems administration tasks tailored to our customers' needs. Working closely with Project Managers, you will play a key role in delivering customer projects on time, within budget, and according to expectations.

By designing and administering physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures, the Project Engineer ensures that our clients’ systems are secure, efficient, and highly reliable. Through mentorship of junior staff, close vendor collaboration, and proactive system optimization, this role bridges sophisticated systems engineering with exceptional customer service.
Job Description
- Project Delivery & Architecture Collaboration: Work closely with customers, internal team members, and Project Managers to design, administer, and implement physical, virtual, and cloud-based technology solutions that support customer needs.
- Infrastructure Design & Administration: Design, administer, and guide the deployment of virtual and physical infrastructure—including Virtual Servers, Server Hosts, and SANs—to deliver secure, reliable client services.
- Core Technology Implementations: Configure and deploy technologies including Microsoft OS Servers/Desktops, Apple OS Desktops, Microsoft Office, Active Directory, Federated Services, Outlook/Exchange, File/Print Servers, DHCP, DNS, High Availability, Virtualization, Group Policy, Terminal Services, Clustering Services, Mobile Devices, Office 365, occasional Linux systems, Network Security applications, and monitoring platforms.
- Advanced Incident Resolution: Identify, diagnose, research, triage, resolve, and escalate complex technical issues. Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to drive rapid issue resolution and comprehensive root-cause documentation.
- System Maintenance & Security Auditing: Perform regular implementation of security best practices, execute system audits, and manage the deployment of patches, updates, and system firmware.
- Knowledge Management: Regularly create, update, and maintain detailed technical documentation within the internal knowledge base to share with engineering staff and clients.
- Team Mentorship: Provide technical training, guidance, and mentorship for less experienced engineers to foster a culture of learning.
- Strategic Input: Assist in researching long-term infrastructure strategies and capacity planning to align with future software and hardware needs.
- Client Engagement: Provide outstanding support and maintain clear communication with clients via phone, email, and virtual meetings, particularly when managing complex or sensitive needs.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is required.
- Minimum of 10 years of proven experience in systems engineering and resolving critical/complex technical issues.
- Previous Managed Service Provider (MSP) experience is highly preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience in a systems administration capacity within a professional business environment, including robust experience with PowerShell and general scripting.
- Industry-standard technical certifications are highly valued, with a strong preference for:
- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
- Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP)
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- CompTIA Network+
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep Systems Expertise: Proficient in maintaining and troubleshooting Microsoft OS Servers/Desktops, Apple OS, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, virtualization platforms, and core cloud suites.
- Technical Applications: Familiarity or experience with Datto RMM/Autotask, Auvik, ITGlue, CrowdStrike, BitDefender, Cynet, VMWare, ESXi, Hyper-V, and enterprise backup systems (Datto/Backup Exec/Veeam) is highly beneficial.
- Network & Cloud Infrastructure: Intermediate to advanced knowledge of firewalls (SonicWall/Fortinet/Meraki), wireless solutions (Ruckus/Ubiquiti), VLANs, Azure AD, on-premises Exchange, and VoIP platforms (RingCentral/Teams).
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written, verbal, and telephone communication skills. Ability to communicate with business and technical staff seamlessly.
- Problem-Solving & Agility: Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to self-manage tasks, set priorities under pressure, and quickly escalate issues to vendors or management when necessary.
- Professional Mindset: Detail-oriented, organized, intrinsically motivated to grow, and comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative, compassionate team environment.
Job Type: Full-time, Hourly Non-Exempt
Work Location: Ontario, CA. This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (typically 2-3 days in-office, with remote flexibility for the remaining days). However, all work-from-home options are extended at the sole discretion of management and may be modified or eliminated at any time based on company and operational needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Close visual acuity to read technical documentation, analyze system data, and view computer monitors for extended periods.
- Clear verbal communication and sufficient auditory capability to provide instruction, lead meetings, and interact with others through voice, phone, and video conferences.
- Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move IT equipment and office supplies weighing up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to reliably commute to and work fully on-site at the Ontario, CA corporate office as required by business needs.
