General Manager of Heavy Haul, Trucking Operations

Role Overview
We are seeking a proven, hands-on leader to oversee and scale a growing trucking operation specializing in heavy haul, over-dimensional, and open deck freight.This role is responsible for the full operational leadership of the trucking company—owning everything from driver management and fleet performance to compliance, safety, and regulatory oversight. This is a highly visible position that will directly influence the growth, efficiency, and long-term success of the business.The ideal candidate brings a strong background in leading trucking companies, understands the complexity of asset-based operations, and has the leadership presence to build, develop, and hold teams accountable.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Leadership
- Lead all day-to-day trucking operations, ensuring efficiency, profitability, and service excellence
- Oversee dispatch, routing, scheduling, and load execution across the fleet
- Drive operational KPIs including utilization, revenue per truck, on-time performance, and cost control
- Build scalable processes to support continued fleet expansion
Driver Leadership & Culture
- Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing drivers
- Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards
- Partner with safety and compliance to ensure drivers operate at the highest level
- Foster a culture of professionalism, communication, and ownership
Fleet & Asset Management
- Oversee all aspects of fleet operations including tractors, trailers, and specialized equipment
- Manage maintenance programs, vendor relationships, and lifecycle planning
- Ensure proper licensing, registration, plating, and asset tracking
- Optimize fleet utilization and ROI on equipment investments
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure full compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations
- Maintain accurate and audit-ready records including driver qualification files, safety records, and equipment documentation
- Oversee permitting for heavy haul and over-dimensional freight
- Lead safety initiatives and reduce risk across the operation
Financial & Business Performance
- Own the P&L for the trucking operation
- Drive cost control across fuel, maintenance, insurance, and labor
- Identify opportunities for margin improvement and operational efficiency
- Partner with leadership on fleet growth strategy and capital investments
Growth & Strategic Execution
- Lead the continued expansion of the fleet (recent additions include 12 trucks and 20 trailers)
- Build infrastructure to support scaling operations without sacrificing service
- Identify opportunities to expand capabilities in heavy haul and specialized freight
- Implement systems and reporting to support data-driven decision making
Qualifications
- 7+ years of leadership experience in an asset-based trucking company
- Proven experience managing drivers, dispatch, safety, and compliance functions
- Deep understanding of heavy haul, open deck, and over-dimensional operations
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and trucking compliance requirements
- Experience managing fleet assets, maintenance programs, and vendor relationships
- Demonstrated success owning or influencing P&L performance
- Ability to lead from the front—hands-on, accountable, and solutions-oriented
- Strong communication and leadership presence
