General Description:
The Driver Helper/CDL Trainee is responsible for assisting drivers with the delivery, handling, and moving of freight and other materials either manually or by using a forklift, pallet jack, or other equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Load and unload freight on trailers or while assisting with making deliveries using a forklift, pallet jack, or manually.
- Read and interpret shipping labels, shipping orders, manifests, and freight bills.
- Assists the Driver with verifying the load against shipping papers and preparing receipt for load pick-up.
- Utilizes navigation applications to assist with determining the best route.
- Hand load, rewrap, sort, or stack freight as needed.
- Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies.
- Performs facility maintenance and housekeeping in order to maintain a clean, safe work area.
- Work in accordance with all federal, state, local and company compliance guidelines (i.e., Safety, DOT, etc.).
- Provides a high level of service through courteous and expeditious customer service to clients while assisting with deliveries.
- Maintains equipment and keeps the yard, dock and facility clean and organized.
- Detects and eliminates or minimizes safety hazards.
- Works outside of general job description duties to assist others on an as-needed basis.
Job Qualifications Mandatory:
- Can satisfactorily pass a background test.
- Meets or exceeds the medical standards of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and can satisfactorily pass a drug and alcohol test.
- Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions.
- Fluent in English.
- Capable of working independently with minimal direction.
- Ability to follow instructions, either while working independently, or as part of a team.
- Additional requirements may be required in different locations and/or accounts.

Work Environment:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particle.
- The employee may be required to work in high/precarious places, with hazardous materials, with loud noises, and in various weather conditions.
- A driver helper typically spends 70-80% of the time in a tractor. While riding in the vehicle, the employee is exposed to noise and vibration caused by the engine, tires on the road, etc.
- Routes can vary, but are local routes generally below 100 miles.
- Position is exposed to outside elements such as weather, dust, diesel fumes, etc.

MOBILITY: The Driver Helper must frequently lift and/or move up to 60-75 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
A Driver Helper spends 60-100% of the time: bending at the waist, neck, knees, wrist and shoulders; twisting and reaching hands; twisting and rotating forearms and elbows; lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying; and kneeling, stooping, crouching and crawling. Many of these require standing for prolong periods of time and repeating the same body movements.
While in the dock area and the yard there is exposure to loud noise and/or vibration, fumes, orders, dusts, gasses and various weather conditions.
Must be able to physically operate a variety of equipment safely and be able to frequently enter/exit the vehicle as well as the rear cargo area.
HEARING: The Dock Worker must be able to hear sounds and recognize the difference between them. They must also be able to obtain or provide verbal communications in person or via phone or radio.
VISUAL ACUITY: Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
