Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary (“PSDS”) Medical Director – Full -Time Position
Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday eight (8) hours onsite at the Sanctuary, and at least two (2) other days onsite for four to five (4 – 5) hours for a total of four (4) days each week onsite at the Sanctuary, and remote administrative work between fourteen and sixteen (14 – 16) hours per week. 50% on for medical care (typically seven (7) days on and seven (7) days off) 100% on call for staff emergencies, evaluations and Board concerns. Average total Medical Director hours per week of forty (40) hours.
Compensation: $160,000 and full benefits
The Medical Director provides comprehensive medical care for the dogs at Peppers Senior Dog Sanctuary, oversees the veterinary team, and contributes to strategic planning and operational efficiency. This role requires a highly skilled veterinarian with strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities. Due to the continued growth of PSDS, the expansion of its services, and the nature of the job duties, the position requires physical presence onsite at the Sanctuary at least four (4) days each week, with any remote work preapproved by PSDS’s Executive Director. The Medical Director is also on call for urgent medical emergency situations as outlined above.
1. Direct Animal Care:
o Schedule and perform medical care
o Maintain accurate records
o Coordinate specialist care
o Manage medical issues (on call availability required for medical emergencies only)
o Administer medications
o Oversee euthanasia procedures
2. Medical Oversight:
o Conduct intake screenings and make recommendations
Executive Director
o Develop and oversee enrichment plans
o Create treatment plans
o Make decisions on euthanasia
3. Medical Resource Management:
o Manage all medical equipment, review lease agreements and contracts, and work with Executive Director to negotiate pricing
o Create, maintain and manage inventories of medical equipment, clinic supplies, drugs, and food
o Create and maintain logs for animal medications; organize weekly medications
o Set up and oversee practice management software
4. Veterinary Staff Management & Operations:
o Supervise and mentor members of the veterinary team, care team, and rehabilitation staff
o Foster a positive and collaborative work environment
o Manage staff schedules and timekeeping
o Contribute to and participate in veterinary employee performance reviews (to be conducted with Executive Director and/or HR manager)
o Support veterinary staff development through continuing education opportunities, subject to approval by, Executive Director
o Be available at least one hour a day for in-person meetings and discussions with team members
5. Strategic Planning
o Contribute to the development and implementation of veterinary care strategies, spay/neuter clinic planning, vaccine clinic planning, and public-facing clinic initiatives
o Participate in strategic discussions with Strategic Planning Committee and/or the Leadership Team regarding PSDS’s mission and direction
o Develop and enforce biosecurity protocols for onsite and offsite events.
o Oversee intake procedures (medical and behavioral aspects)
o Oversee and help recruit employees for Pepper’s Crossing
6. Communication and Collaboration:
o Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, the Board of Directors, and donors regarding dog-related issues
o Collaborate with development team to connect with veterinary industry professionals and potential donors
o Serve as public representative at events upon request
o Manage relationships with veterinary vendors, public clinics, and animal welfare organizations
o Provide euthanasia notifications to PSDS staff and others as requested by Executive Director
7. Regulation, Compliance & Reporting:
o Ensure organizational compliance with PACFA and DEA regulations; provide support to administrative staff to ensure proper documentation and controls
o Track financial and care statistics
o Provide data and reports to Board of Directors and be available to answer questions
o Manage invoices and maintain organized records
8. Content Creation and Review:
o Develop dog-related content for policies, procedures, training materials, social media, website, and fundraising materials
o Provide final approval for dog-related content
Pay: $130,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
