Position Overview
The Safety and Environmental Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and managing site safety and environmental programs within a lean manufacturing environment. This role leads safety initiatives, conducts training programs for supervisors and employees, and promotes a culture of workplace safety and environmental compliance.
Key responsibilities include evaluating workplace conditions that may impact employee health and safety, analyzing findings, and recommending corrective actions to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory standards. The position also supports daily administrative functions, including scheduling meetings, maintaining safety and environmental reports and metrics, and managing required documentation and records.
Working under general supervision, the Safety and Environmental Supervisor exercises sound judgment, initiative, and a moderate degree of creativity and independent decision-making. This role also provides leadership and direction to Environmental Operators.
Areas of Focus
The Safety and Environmental Supervisor supports line and staff management in interpreting and complying with OSHA regulations and safety standards. This role also ensures wastewater operations remain compliant with all applicable state and federal environmental regulations.
Responsibilities include preparing reports and maintaining accurate records for water treatment systems, including meter readings, testing results, chemical usage, equipment operation, and all required regulatory documentation.

- Chair the Employee Safety Committee
- Investigate injuries in conjunction with line and staff personnel, Human Resources and Medical Department. Notify supervisor of pertinent details
- Assist in the evaluation of hazardous conditions and practices and develop hazard control practices and programs
- Keeps apprised of development in federal and state safety laws likely to affect the company
- Assist in communicating hazards control information and evaluations effectiveness of the control
- Assist in coordinating safety and industrial hygiene services in conjunction with medical department
- Draft reports with lab test results and present to supervisor and Medical Department for review and approval. Interpret results in terms of potential impairment to health of employees and discusses impressions with supervisor
- Studies work operations, details of nature of the work, materials and equipment used, products and by-products and employee workforce profile
- Studies work operations, details of nature of the work, materials and equipment used, products and byproducts, and employee workforce profile. Industrial hygiene studies may involve exposure to dust, fumes, mists, gases, vapors, noise, heat, and cold
- Conduct supervisor and employee training and education in safe and efficient work methods, including safety orientation training of new employees. Assist with contractor training based upon the type of work to be performed. Assist with conducting audits of contractor’s files for compliance and documentation updates
- Responsible for effective application of safety and environmental policies and practices and to investigate and eliminate hazardous conditions and unsafe practices
- Assist in performing job safety assessments (JSA’s)
- Assist with housekeeping inspections in the plant and take steps to correct non-conforming conditions with safety practices and regulations
- May interface with regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, AQMD, EPA, Sanitation District, CUPA, EPD hazardous Waste Unit, DOT)
- Follow ISO procedures and track safety & environmental inspections and revisions for ISO compliance
- Comply with all Hazardous Waste governing regulations
- Handle all requests for MSDS’s and perform semi-annual chemical audits including revision to the chemical inventory and maintenance the MSDS database
- Maintain safety and environmental files, permit books and reference material
- Member of the emergency response team
- Other duties as assigned
- Responsible for directly supervising approximately 9 hourly team members
Basic Qualifications
- Associates degree in Safety & Environmental, Safety Engineering Industrial Hygiene or related field
- 5-7 experience in related field
- Knowledge of state and government regulation that affect safety and environmental
- Organizational skills
- Ability to deal effectively with people
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Access
- Good written and verbal communication skills are essential
- Project management skills
- Wastewater license
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety & Environmental, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related field
- First aid/CPR Trained
- Forklift instructor certified
Pay: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
