Chemical Process Engineer
Department: Engineering | Reports To: Engineering Manager | Experience: 2–5 Years
About the Role
We are seeking a technically strong Chemical Process Engineer with a solid oil and gas background to join our engineering team. This role centers on process simulation, P&ID/PFD development and interpretation, and day-to-day collaboration with operations, controls, instrumentation, and piping disciplines. You will be expected to hit the ground running with simulation tools and to work confidently with process documentation both on paper and in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, run, and maintain process simulations using ProMax, HYSYS, Aspen Plus, ChemCAD, or equivalent tools to support design, optimization, and troubleshooting
- Perform rigorous mass and energy balance calculations for new and existing process systems
- Create, review, and redline P&IDs and PFDs in accordance with project and client standards; identify and resolve discrepancies between design documents and installed equipment
- Conduct field walks to verify installed equipment against P&IDs, recognizing and interpreting all major components including vessels, heat exchangers, rotating equipment, control valves, instrumentation, and specialty items
- Support capital projects from FEED through commissioning, including equipment datasheets, vendor technical review, and startup assistance
- Collaborate with instrumentation, controls, and piping engineers to ensure process requirements are properly reflected in design deliverables
- Participate in HAZOPs, PHAs, and MOC reviews; contribute process expertise to safety evaluations
- Troubleshoot process upsets and deviations; develop and implement corrective actions in coordination with operations
- Prepare and maintain engineering calculations, technical reports, and procedures to applicable standards
- Support environmental and regulatory compliance activities as required by project scope
Required Qualifications
Process Simulation — Non-Negotiable
- Minimum 1–2 years of professional (post-degree) hands-on experience with at least one of the following: ProMax, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, or ChemCAD
- Demonstrated ability to build, troubleshoot, and interpret simulation models independently — not limited to academic coursework
- Oil and gas process experience strongly preferred; candidates with refining, midstream, gas processing, or LNG backgrounds are well-positioned for this role
P&IDs, PFDs, and Mass & Energy Balances — Non-Negotiable
- Proven ability to read, develop, and mark up P&IDs and PFDs to industry standards (ISA, ASME, or company-equivalent)
- Must be able to identify all major P&ID components by symbol and by sight in the field: vessels, columns, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, control valves, safety valves, instrumentation tags, and specialty items
- Comfortable walking down installed systems and reconciling field conditions against P&ID documentation
- Proficiency in mass and energy balance development and closure for process systems
General
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
- 2–5 years of professional process engineering experience in oil and gas or a closely related process industry
- Strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer as applied to real process systems
- Ability to produce clear, well-organized engineering documentation and communicate technical content effectively across disciplines
Preferred Qualifications
- ProMax experience specifically, particularly for amine treating, glycol dehydration, or NGL fractionation applications
- Working familiarity with instrumentation and controls concepts: control loops, transmitter types, control valve sizing, DCS/PLC interactions — sufficient to collaborate effectively with I&C engineers
- Basic piping familiarity: pipe specifications, line sizing, valve types, and the ability to read isometric or plan drawings
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or active pursuit of Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
- Experience participating in HAZOP studies or other process safety reviews
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards: API, ASME, NFPA, EPA/OSHA PSM
