San Francisco Animal Medical Center is looking for an experienced veterinary assistant or RVT to be our Surgery Department Lead. As an extension of the leadership team, you will be assisting in directing and coordinating the daily operations of San Francisco Animal Medical Center (SF AMC), while being in support of our policies, goals, and objectives. You will be working closely with both surgeons to provide support, guild, and help build our Surgery service. We are passionate about providing excellent care and high standard of medicine to our clients and patients, as well as a positive and supportive work environment to our staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Technical Skills - Applicants should be proficient in:

• Animal restraint and handling.
• Venipuncture and IVC placement.
• Obtaining vitals.
• Triaging emergencies.
• Monitoring for sedations and anesthesia.
• Communicating respectfully with both clients and coworkers.
• Comfortable with medical calculations, including but not limited to drug calculations, constant rate infusions, and fluid additives.
• Must also be able to stand for long periods, crouch, and lift up to 40 pounds.

Staff Leadership and Development Skills/Goals:

• Works as a member of the leadership team to help guide the preparation of short and long range plans for the team and department.
• Guide and mentor team members by working along-side and directly leading the group.
• Assist supervisors to identify areas of need for team and individual clinical skills improvements.
• Assist supervisors to develop training protocols for individuals and our team.
• Assist supervisors to develop new protocols, and help to ensure protocols are followed correctly.
• Facilitate hands-on training for individuals and our team.
• Evaluate, help develop, and maintain a process for managing skill development of team members.
• Conflict resolution for support staff issues.
• Provide a confidential forum for complaints.
• Handle any problems that arise with staff on your shifts to the best of your abilities.
• Try to resolve any employee conflicts to the best of your ability and report any necessary incident to your supervisor.
• Assist supervisor in resolving employee issues. Advise and monitor disciplinary actions when necessary.
• Assist employees with any problem they might have. Help them find the solution, direct them to the appropriate person to take care of the problem.
• Provide input on issues concerning changes in operational protocols.
• Schedule and lead department meetings.
• Provide feedback on problems and potential solutions.
• Encourage and support a positive team morale.
• Curb gossip and negative or inappropriate conversation on the floor.
• Assign positions, patients and responsibilities to team members on your shift.
• Make sure that the shift runs efficiently.
• Monitor that technicians are doing a job that is appropriate to their level.
• Monitor that technicians adhere to the dress code and make sure cell phones are put away.
• Monitor overtime and make sure that the first person to be allowed to leave is the first person due to be done with their shift.
• Decide who goes home early or gets called off when it is slow. Consult the Technician Supervisors before making this decision if necessary.
• Help with onboarding and training new team members. Double check the trainee’s work (drug calculations, documentation, etc.)
• Provide timely and direct feedback to staff, in an appropriate manner, to assist with team skill development.
• Make sure that hospital policies are adhered to.
• Receive and provide proper rounds/huddles when your shift is beginning, and communicate rounds at the end of your shift.
• Remind staff of cats and dogs that may be a “Caution” to help prevent bites. If there is a bite incident, have them fill out the incident bite forms/packet.
• Motivate employees to use their time efficiently to work on various tasks throughout their shift.
• Delegate additional tasks if patient census is low.
• Discuss scheduling concerns and needs for the department. Make suggestions for staffing changes.
• Assist in performance reviews for team members. Recommend adjustments to improve effectiveness.
• Model appropriate professional conduct related to demeanor, work ethic, and adherence to the core values of the San Francisco Animal Medical Center (SF AMC).
• Work closely with their co-lead to develop a cohesive working environment for all shifts and days of the week.
• Build and maintain respectful and positive working relationships with SF AMC staff and public using principles of good customer service.
• Be available to assist/problem solve for other departments and services when needed. If not available to help, will coordinate help from another person/lead/supervisor.

All candidates for the Emergency Department Lead position will start in a technician role for the probationary period of 90 days. At the end of this period, their supervisors will confirm that the candidate is a good fit for the role before said candidate will fully assume the position of lead.
