A Substation Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment and systems within electrical substations. They ensure the safe and efficient operation of power distribution systems by monitoring equipment, making necessary repairs, and maintaining key components like circuit breakers, transformers, and voltage regulators.

Job Duties

• Work on energized conductors up to 500 volts 
• Install miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings during construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits 
• Test electrical equipment and systems, identify malfunctions, and troubleshoot complex electrical problems.  
• Perform transmission and distribution switching 
• Rig, tie knots and splice rope 
• Assist qualified mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance 
• Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems 
• Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc. 
• Filtering oil and minor repairs to transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulators 
• Prepare reports and records 
• Operate Company’s vehicles and equipment 
• Execute and complete all other duties assigned by supervisors 
• Adjust/time switches.
• Elevated work under 6 ft or 6 ft and higher.
• Spotting.
• Tag lining.
• Qualified observer.
• Bonding ground grid (crimping)
• Building switches.
• Conduit installation.
• Control cable terminations.
• Cutting/crimping/installing jumpers (on ground/in air)
• Disassembly on ground of steel, structures, elec equipment.
• Demolishing horizontally mounted disconnect switches, A-frame dead ends, below grade conduit, below grade ground grid, bus, steel communication poles, control cable, direct imbed concrete poles, HV equipment, oil, filled equipment, static mast structures, steel monopoles, string bus, vertically mounted disconnect switches, wood pole structures and yard steel.
• DMC crimps for ground grid, HV buss and string buss.
• Excavating with backhoe, mini-excavators and ride on trenches.
• Flying hook stick switches.
• Foundation installation.
• Ground grid installation.
• Grounding equipment.
• Hanging TPG’s (supervised)
• Install buss clamps for buss, CAP banks and CCVT’s, control house waterfall and equipment lettering, equipment numbers, feeder breakers, HV breakers, HV IPO breakers, LA’s, phasing lettering, PT’s, SSVT’s, steel A-frame dead ends, switches, wave traps and yard steels.
• Manhole installation.
• Material inventory management.
• Operating any fueled equipment (OPP card required)
• Pulling fiberoptics and interduct.
• Spreading yard rock.
• Taking down TPG’s.
• Trenway installation.
• Welding jumpers.
• Performs other duties as assigned 
• Complies with all policies and standards 

Requirements

• Successful completion of the Burns & McDonnell Substation Apprenticeship Program OR 7 years of verifiable experience performing journey-level high voltage (4kV and above) substation technician duties  
• Ability and willingness to travel to various Company locations and job sites.  
• Must be able to assess through Burns and McDonnell assessment program
• Ability to stand, walk, sit, or reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, push and pull 
• Ability to use repetitive hand motions and the ability to grasp and operate field tools and equipment  
• Ability to climb on, in or through equipment in confined spaces and elevated work using fall protection harnesses.  
• Ability to work long hours with infrequent days off, night shifts, and in adverse climates.  
• Ability to use respirators or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.  
• Ability to utilize vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  
• Ability to lift, carry and or move up to 60 pounds  
• Ability to work in an environment with loud noises and vibrations for extended periods of time
• Ability to properly wear and/or use Personal Protection Equipment
• Ability to seek advice, make decisions, exercise sound judgement, and solve problems 
• Ability to work under stressful situations 
• Ability to learn and adopt new processes and technology  
• Ability to apply verbal and/or written instructions or other information
