Position Summary
Miller Transportation is seeking an experienced and safety-focused school bus driver to serve as a School Bus Driver Trainer. This position is an extension of the school bus driver role and requires the successful candidate to perform all duties and responsibilities expected of a school bus driver, in addition to providing training, evaluation, and support to new and current drivers.
The School Bus Driver Trainer will continue performing regular driving assignments while assisting with driver training, applicant evaluations, and onboarding activities. This role requires flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with the Operations Team in Indianapolis and the Safety Department in Louisville to support Miller Transportation's commitment to safe and reliable student transportation.
The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable and experienced driver who leads by example, has expert knowledge of Indiana school bus regulations, and takes pride in helping others develop the skills needed to become safe and successful school bus drivers.
Essential Responsibilities
- Safely perform all duties and responsibilities of a Miller Transportation school bus driver while demonstrating the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and compliance as a role model for fellow drivers.
- Provide behind-the-wheel training and coaching for new and current drivers.
- Participate in classroom instruction, safety meetings, and driver development activities.
- Maintain open availability to assist with training needs, which may occur on short notice based on applicant schedules and operational needs.
- Assist with conducting road tests and evaluating driver applicants.
- Provide feedback regarding applicant performance, driving skills, and readiness.
- Assist with the driver hiring and onboarding process as needed.
- Train drivers on Miller Transportation procedures, safe driving practices, student management, and job expectations.
- Ensure training activities align with Indiana school bus rules, regulations, and safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate training documentation and records.
- Work closely with the Indianapolis Operations Team and Louisville Safety Department to support driver development and safety initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to support company operations.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- A minimum of 1 years previous experience in passenger transportation or similar field preferred. Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Valid Indiana School Bus Driver Certificate (Yellow Card).
- Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Must have and maintain a DOT medical card.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must possess and exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Expert knowledge of Indiana school bus rules, regulations, and safety requirements.
- Demonstrate commitment to safety and a professional driving record.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups and participating in classroom presentations.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback.
- Flexible and dependable with the ability to respond to changing training needs.
- Ability to effectively balance training responsibilities with regular driving assignments.
- Ability to collaborate with Operations and Safety teams.
- Previous training, mentoring, or leadership experience is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands:
This position is primarily a sedentary position. The work requires the use of hands for grasping, pushing and pulling of arm controls and fine manipulations. The work requires the use of feet for repetitive movements. The work requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, and the ability to carry, push, or pull medium weights. The work requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, driving automotive equipment, and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases.
