Are you an Expert at using Soldering Irons to solder Vertical Copper Gutter Seams?
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Copper Gutter Solder Seam Specialist with strong experience soldering vertical seams on copper gutters using a soldering iron. This person will join copper gutter sections using a soldering iron with precise, clean soldering techniques that ensure leak-free seams, consistent appearance, and strong adhesion. The candidate must pass a soldering certification from an outside construction consultant. Must either live on Maui, or be willing to travel to Maui and live at a company house during the work week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Solder vertical seams on copper gutter assemblies using a hand soldering iron.
- Prepare mating surfaces for soldering (cleaning, flux application, tinning as required).
- Maintain consistent solder bead size, coverage, and seam finish on all joined sections.
- Follow specified joining methods and material requirements (flux, solder type/grade, temperatures).
- Inspect seams for quality (full penetration, proper wetting, no gaps, no cold joints).
- Perform light rework and touch-ups to meet quality standards.
- Assist with basic staging of gutter sections (cutting, handling, fitting) as needed.
- Communicate issues with materials, measurements, or tolerances to the lead/manager.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience soldering vertical seams on copper gutters using a soldering iron.
- Demonstrated skill in:
- surface prep and flux control
- achieving clean, consistent solder coverage
- preventing overheating or damage to copper
- identifying and correcting poor solder joints
- Ability to read simple assembly instructions and follow work standards.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship/appearance.
- Comfortable working with hand tools and fine metalwork in a production/shop setting.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and handle copper sections safely.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with related copper work (flashing, downspouts, roofing metalwork).
- Training or certification in soldering/metal fabrication.
- Experience using brazing/soldering equipment in a shop environment.
Physical & Work Requirements:
- Ability to lift and handle materials/tools.
- Ability to work on job sites (currently on Maui) with heat/soldering fumes.
- Ability to stand, reach, and work on the gutters for long periods.
- Willingness to work overtime during busy periods.
Quality & Safety Requirements
- Follow all safety procedures.
- Use appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection, etc.).
- Maintain safe handling and storage of solder, flux, and cleaning agents.
- Ensure every seam meets leak-free workmanship standards before acceptance.
