Director Integration Engineering
Acculon Energy is at the forefront of testing, engineering, and manufacturing for the next generation of energy solutions, specializing in lithium and sodium-ion battery modules and packs. Based in Columbus, OH, our mission is to deliver high-performance, innovative battery solutions that meet the dynamic needs of our global clients.
Position Overview
We are currently executing a strategic transition from engineering services to high-volume production releases. We are looking for a practical, results-oriented Director of Integration Engineering to lead this evolution. This role is critical to ensuring our advanced energy storage systems successfully move from engineering validation to deployment.
While this role carries the strategic responsibility of a Director, it operates with the tactical agility of a hands-on Engineering Manager. We require a "player-coach" who values clear execution over corporate bureaucracy. You must be equally capable of developing a long-term production validation strategy with executive leadership and stepping directly into the lab to resolve a CAN bus conflict alongside your team. You will own the transition from prototype validation to solid, production-grade product releases.
Responsibilities
- Standardize Testing Frameworks: Shift the integration testing infrastructure from custom, project-based testing to repeatable, rigorous validation roadmaps optimized for high-volume production scaling.
- Own the Infrastructure: Oversee and actively contribute to the design, build, and automation of internal test environments, including Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) setups and custom test fixtures.
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Serve as the primary, direct technical interface between hardware design, embedded software, and manufacturing to resolve integration challenges early in the product lifecycle.
- Execute Product Integration: Direct and physically support the engineering work required to integrate Acculon battery systems into customer vehicles, heavy machinery, and industrial equipment.
- System-Level Troubleshooting: Maintain a strong, daily presence in the lab and field. Actively diagnose system-level issues, debug firmware-to-hardware interfaces, and isolate communication bottlenecks.
- Calibration & Configuration: Develop and deploy production-ready software and firmware calibrations customized for specific customer application profiles.
- Manage and Grow a Team: Lead and mentor a small, highly accountable team of integration and validation engineers. Focus on setting clear technical objectives and removing operational roadblocks.
- Operational Documentation: Establish clean, straightforward documentation practices for test procedures, integration manuals, and system configurations to facilitate operational scaling.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in battery systems, automotive engineering, vehicle calibration, electrification, or complex mechatronics.
- 4+ years of direct team leadership or engineering management experience.
- Proven experience working in environments transitioning from custom prototype engineering services to formalized production product releases.
- Advanced hands-on experience using protocol analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters and calibration tools such as ETAS INCA.
- Technical mastery of CAN, SPI, I2C, and automotive communication standards.
- Direct experience reading electrical schematics, interpreting datasheets, and debugging embedded C code on microcontrollers.
- Solid operational understanding of Battery Management Systems (BMS) architecture, safety state machines, and power electronics.
- Familiarity with safety-critical development standards (e.g., ISO 26262, IEC 61508).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to debugging complex, integrated systems.
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
Soft Skills
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between different engineering disciplines.
- Self reliant engineering leader with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive and detail-oriented approach to identifying and solving problems.
