The position of a Prevention Program Specialist is a very versatile position that has ever changing priorities. Prevention Program Specialists collaborate with other community, county and state partners to provide core substance use prevention strategies to include Youth Prevention Education, Community Based Process, Environmental Strategies and general prevention education at an individual and community level. The Prevention Program Specialist ensures comprehensive evaluation of reaction, learning, behavior change and results for all interventions.
A Prevention Program Specialist must be self-motivated and a self-starter and be able to work with minimal direct supervision and show evidence of the work they have accomplished.
Prevention Program Specialist Job Description
Title: Prevention Program Specialist
Site: Fayetteville, NC (serving Cumberland County)
Supervisor: Reports to Program Manager or Vice President of Prevention Services
Overview: The efforts of the program specialist focus on empowering individuals, families, organizations and communities to make healthy, responsible lifestyle choices
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Active coalition participation
- Training and implementation of evidence based education programs
- Alternative activities (after school programming, drop- out prevention activities, alternative education programs, enrichment programs, mentoring programs)
- Community and volunteer training
- Systematic planning
- Technical assistance to schools, collaboratives and community agencies
- Program evaluation and reporting as required
- Meet requirements of various funding sources
- Attendance at required training (local and out of town)
- Duties as assigned for prevention work
Knowledge and Understanding of the following areas:
- Coalition work
- Characteristics of youth and adolescents
- How to develop resiliency
- Strategic planning
- Application of new research to practice
- Motivation techniques
- Recreational programming

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work or related field preferred and/or equivalent experience in community based services.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Licenses, Certificates, Registrations:
- North Carolina Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Certification – Preferred/or commitment to obtain CSAPC certification in assigned time frame
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
