Overview

The Theater Instructor is responsible for delivering an engaging, student-centered after-school program that introduces K–8 students to the fundamentals of acting, voice, movement, improvisation, and theatrical production. The instructor brings passion for the performing arts, a talent for youth engagement.

This position requires hands-on instruction across the theatrical disciplines: acting technique, script work and character development, voice and diction, physical expression and stage movement, improvisation.

Instructional Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, age-appropriate theater lessons for elementary and/or middle school students (grades K–8) in an after-school setting
• Teach foundational acting techniques including sensory awareness, emotional memory, objective and obstacle, character development, given circumstances, and scene study
• Lead warm-up routines covering physical and vocal preparation: stretching, body awareness, vocal range and projection, articulation exercises, tongue twisters, and breath control
• Facilitate improvisation activities and theater games.
• Incorporate musical theater elements as appropriate: basic singing technique, musical phrasing, choreography fundamentals, and movement to music
• Differentiate instruction across the grade span (K–8); younger students focus on drama games, storytelling.

Duties

• Design and implement comprehensive theater and performing arts curricula tailored to different age groups and skill levels
• Lead engaging classroom activities that promote acting, improvisation, choreography, dance instruction, and stage presence
• Manage classroom environments to ensure safety, positive behavior, and productive learning experiences
• Support students with special needs or early childhood development requirements through tailored teaching strategies
• Maintain detailed lesson plans, progress reports, and student portfolios to track development and provide feedback.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, Drama, Performing Arts, Theater Education, or related field preferred
• Demonstrated experience in acting, directing, theatrical production, or theater education — professional, community, or academic theater background accepted
• Working knowledge of acting technique, improvisation, and the fundamentals of theatrical production
• Experience working with youth (ages 5–14) in an educational, after-school, camp, or performing arts setting
• Ability to manage a group of K–8 students in a high-energy, performance-based environment
• Strong communication, facilitation, and group leadership skills

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
