Job Summary
As a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), you will play a critical role in patient care by performing both routine and specialized diagnostic test panels on blood, body fluids, and clinical specimens. Operating within an acute care laboratory setting, you will run moderate and high-complexity testing while upholding rigorous quality control standards, instrumentation protocols, and clinical regulatory guidelines. You will collaborate daily with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to provide rapid, accurate diagnostic insights essential for timely patient outcomes.
Essential Functions & Job Duties
- High-Complexity Testing: Perform moderate and high-complexity diagnostic laboratory analyses efficiently and accurately, ensuring prompt reporting and meticulous documentation of clinical data.
- Quality Assurance Protocols: Strictly adhere to laboratory quality control guidelines. Analyze raw test data, troubleshoot out-of-range results, and actively resolve data variances.
- Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Clean, operate, and maintain sophisticated medical laboratory instruments. Perform routine preventative maintenance, troubleshoot equipment faults, and escalate mechanical issues directly to laboratory leadership.
- Laboratory Informatics: Demonstrate strong tech proficiency utilizing complex laboratory information systems (LIS) for baseline and department-specific processing functions.
- Specimen Chain-of-Custody: Securely collect, process, handle, and document chain-of-custody urine drug screenings according to regulatory standards.
- Infection Control & Safety: Maintain strict compliance with established laboratory safety frameworks, consistently donning required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and obeying infection control policies.
- Phlebotomy Support: Assist with clinical phlebotomy collections and collaborate as a cohesive team member to fulfill overarching lab tasks.
- Regulatory Record Keeping: Maintain orderly, highly accurate medical records and statistical datasets to stay compliant with regulatory bodies and hospital protocols.
- Attendance & Policy Compliance: Maintain highly regular, reliable workplace attendance and adhere to all internal operational policies and service standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological, Chemical, or Physical Science OR
- Military Equivalent Training: Successful completion of an official 50-week minimum military Medical Laboratory Procedures course, carrying an active military occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist.
Experience
- 0 to 2 years of laboratory experience in an acute care setting. (Entry-level candidates with appropriate clinical rotations are welcome to apply).
Certifications & Licensure
- Active MLT Certification through an approved national certification agency required: ASCP, AMT, AAB, HEW, or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough working knowledge of clinical laboratory principles, sample preparation, testing procedures, and quality control systems.
- Sharp proficiency in operating, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting automated lab machinery.
- Excellent critical thinking skills to analyze, audit, and safely interpret quality control metadata and patient profiles.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills to streamline interdepartmental collaboration with doctors and nursing teams.
- Strong attention to detail and sharp organizational systems necessary to guarantee faultless patient records.
