Physician Assistant – Retina Practice

Location: Bonita Springs, FL (Advanced Retina Institute)

Reports to: Medical Director (Retina Specialist)

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) will work collaboratively with the Retina specialists to provide high-quality, compassionate patient care. This role involves performing patient evaluations, conducting diagnostic assessments, assisting with in-office procedures, and supporting the delivery of both clinical and surgical ophthalmic services. The PA will serve as an integral member of the care team, ensuring efficient patient flow while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and professionalism.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Care

- Conduct comprehensive and problem-focused ophthalmic histories and physical exams.
- Evaluate new and established retina patients, including urgent and post-operative visits.
- Order and interpret ophthalmic and systemic diagnostic tests (OCT, fundus photos, fluorescein angiography, labs, imaging, etc.).
- Assist in minor in-office procedures (e.g., intravitreal injections, laser procedures, office-based surgical prep) under physician supervision and per protocol.
- Prescribe medications and therapies within scope of licensure and practice guidelines.
- Provide patient education on diagnoses, treatment options, and ongoing care plans.

Practice Operations

- Support smooth patient flow and timely documentation within the electronic health record (Nextech/RetinaOS).
- Collaborate with scribes, technicians, and front-office staff to optimize efficiency.
- Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up scheduling.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, compliance reviews, and staff education.

Compliance & Professional Standards

- Ensure adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control protocols.
- Stay current with CME, ophthalmology/retina practice trends, and Florida state PA requirements.
- Represent the practice with professionalism and patient-centered focus.

Qualifications

- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current Florida PA license and NCCPA certification (required).
- BLS/ACLS certification (required).
- Minimum 1–2 years of clinical experience; ophthalmology/retina experience preferred, but willing to train.
- Strong diagnostic, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume specialty practice.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

- High-volume retina clinic with frequent patient interaction.
- Ability to stand for long periods, move between exam rooms, and assist with procedures.
- May require occasional evening or weekend hours for urgent cases or on-call coverage.
