Maintenance Technician / Boiler Operator (4th Class Stationary Steam Engineer)

Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician / Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the facility’s boiler systems while supporting the Maintenance & Engineering Team with routine mechanical, electrical, and facility maintenance tasks. This role requires a 4th Class Stationary Steam Engineer license, hands‑on experience with HVAC systems, and familiarity with refrigeration systems commonly used in food manufacturing environments.
The technician ensures continuous steam availability, proper boiler performance, and adherence to regulatory and safety standards, while also contributing to equipment reliability and plant uptime through general maintenance support.
Key Responsibilities
Boiler Operations & Steam System Oversight
- Operate, monitor, and maintain high‑pressure steam boilers and related equipment in accordance with state regulations and company safety standards.
- Perform daily boiler checks, water testing, chemical treatment adjustments, and log all readings accurately.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify leaks, pressure issues, combustion irregularities, or mechanical failures.
- Respond to boiler alarms or abnormal conditions and take corrective action to prevent downtime or safety hazards.
- Maintain compliance with all boiler operation documentation, permits, and inspection requirements.
HVAC & Refrigeration Support
- Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on HVAC systems, including air handlers, rooftop units, and ventilation equipment.
- Assist with monitoring and maintaining ammonia‑based freezing systems, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, and safety controls.
- Support refrigeration technicians during system startups, shutdowns, and routine inspections.
- Identify early signs of refrigeration or HVAC performance issues and escalate as needed.
General Maintenance & Engineering Support
- Complete routine mechanical repairs, lubrication, adjustments, and preventive maintenance tasks across the facility.
- Assist with equipment changeovers, minor rebuilds, and component replacements.
- Troubleshoot basic electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues.
- Support the Maintenance & Engineering Team with work orders, documentation, and equipment status updates.
- Maintain tools, parts, and work areas in clean, safe, and organized condition.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety protocols including LOTO, confined space, hot work, chemical handling, and PPE requirements.
- Ensure boiler, HVAC, and ammonia system activities comply with OSHA, EPA, and state boiler regulations.
- Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation.
- Promote a strong safety culture through communication, awareness, and adherence to best practices.
Qualifications
- 4th Class Stationary Steam Engineer licence (required).
- 2–5 years of experience in industrial maintenance, boiler operation, or utilities systems; food manufacturing experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems and basic refrigeration principles; ammonia system experience strongly preferred. (Training and Development is offered for those with an interest in learning more about these systems.)
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and P&IDs.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and respond quickly to equipment issues.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in hot, cold, wet, or noisy environments as needed.
- Basic computer skills for CMMS entries and documentation.

Pay for this position begins at $24.00 / hour and skill and experience is considered for additional compensation. The schedule is TBD based on business need and the best fit for the candidate, but is not less than 40 hours per week. The schedule does shift to 7 days per week / 12 hours per day during our annual Blueberry Harvest (July through September).
This is a full time, year round, benefits eligible position after an introductory period.
