REFRIGERATION ENGINEER-Entry Level

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Nexus Refrigeration is currently seeking a recent or or May 2025 graduate to start a career as an Industrial Refrigeration Engineer to work out of our Norfolk, VA office. This position will focus on the engineering, design, and safety compliance of large scale industrial refrigeration systems which primarily use ammonia as the refrigerant. Most of our clients are found in the food and beverage industry ranging from large distribution to processing, blast freezing, and cold storage warehousing. Industrial refrigeration, and especially ammonia refrigeration, is a stable, thriving industry. The need for refrigeration has increased year over year for the last 50 years and is predicted to maintain that trend for many years to come. This is an exciting opportunity to join our company and be part of our growing team, working very closely with the owners on a daily basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work closely with other engineers in the up-front design of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems
• Perform calculations for equipment and valve selections, pipe sizing, and safety requirements
• Maintain a working knowledge of industry codes and standards
• Perform drafting and system design in 2D and 3D CAD software
• Travel to job sites for information gathering and system inspections
• Support and collaborate with end users, general contractors, and refrigeration contractors throughout the lifecycle of a project
• Perform detailed refrigeration system inspections for mechanical integrity, safety and code compliance, energy analysis, and troubleshooting and write the associated reports
• Work with health, safety, and environmental personnel as well as maintenance and utilities managers to implement and maintain their Process Safety Management programs (PSM) driven by OSHA/EPA regulations
• Deliver written reports, give presentations, and lead meetings with our customers as required
• Assist with estimating as required

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

• The majority of our business is located in approximately 10 states across the Mid-

Atlantic and Southeast US with occasional travel throughout the country

Approximately 30-40% travel is required. All travel expenses are paid for or reimbursed by the company

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
• Strong drafting skills in both 2D and 3D Auto CAD
• Solid foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid flow
• EIT/FE certification or willingness to sit for the exam at the next offering
• Strong computer skills and proficient with all Microsoft Office products
• Strong proficiency with Excel for reports, calculations, VBA, and system modeling
• Highly self-motivated with a passion for learning and growth
• Analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• EIT/FE certification a plus
• Strong desire to pursue a Professional Engineering (PE) license
• Prior experience in the industrial refrigeration industry a plus
• Co-op or internship experience obtained during undergraduate program
• Strong networking skills and a desire to participate in industry associations

PYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Climb ladders, stairs, and platforms
• Comfortable using scissor lifts and/or other aerial lifts to access equipment
• Exposure to extreme cold temperatures down to -20 degrees F in refrigerated areas
• Comfortable in loud machine rooms requiring hearing protection

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
