Network Engineer I

The Network Engineer I is responsible for all aspects related to the maintenance, repair and support of networks and network-related products to ensure continued operation and functionality of Synoptek and customer network environments. The ideal candidate will have the ability to be technically hands-on, providing high-quality technical support to customers, speaking with a high level of technical understanding, making routine network changes, resolving technical problems, and helping to proactively prevent new issues as it relates to Synoptek and their client's IT infrastructure.
Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain proper ticket hygiene and adhere to ticket handling metric goals

Troubleshoot issues and execute change requests for existing customers

Follow a standard change control process requiring peer and manager approval

Ensure deliverables are completed in a timely manner and meet customer expectations

Identify escalation improvement opportunities within Synoptek's teams

Participate on a rotational on-call schedule

Commit to obtaining relevant training and certificates as determined by manager

Perform Firewall firmware patching during scheduled maintenance windows (sometimes during off hours)

Serve as network custodian for an assigned Synoptek office, performing regular maintenance and handling all issues for that specific office

Perform audit projects

Perform customer documentation assignments

Work with vendors and other third parties to provide support for customer networking environments (including equipment and circuit vendors)

Serve as a networking mentor for support engineers in lower tier departments

Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited college or university
-
In lieu of undergraduate degree, the ratio is 1:1 - meaning one year of college equals one year of work experience and vice versa

Certification in ITIL, CCNA (R&S, Security), Fortinet NSE4 or higher
Experience
-
Customarily has at least 3 years technical experience
-
Customarily has at least 1 year network engineer experience
-
Customarily has at least 2 years of client engagement experience

Experience with multiple network technologies (routing, switching, wireless, circuits) preferred
-
Experience with firewall security, access control list (ACL) management and secure remote management practices, preferred
-
Experience with routing and switching in non-standard/complex deployment environments, a plus

General knowledge of how application data flows over the network (firm foundation of OSI model)

General understanding of routing and switching in network environments including campus LAN, full-meshed WAN, SD-WAN, and Datacenter networks

Has general understanding of routing protocols including static routing and dynamic routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP
-
Has basic understanding and experience supporting layer 2 LAN topologies including extending VLANs across a network core, assigning VLANs to switch ports, and manipulating Spanning Tree topologies

Has basic understanding or and experience with firewall concepts such as security rule creation, NAT, LAN to LAN IPSEC tunnels, SSL VPN, and routing

Has basic understanding of Wireless LAN concepts such as SSID creation, Access Point configuration and troubleshooting, Wireless LAN Controller concepts, authentication and authorization concepts such as RADIUS
