Senior Design Engineer – Mechanical
Skyline Attractions is seeking a highly motivated Senior Design Engineer with a strong background in mechanical design and engineering. This role is responsible for leading the mechanical design, analysis, and delivery of ride systems while ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance with internal specifications and applicable industry standards.
The position combines hands-on engineering execution with technical leadership, including oversight of junior mechanical engineers and coordination across disciplines from concept through installation and commissioning.
Major Responsibilities:
Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Lead and execute the design of mechanical systems for amusement rides, including vehicles, track interfaces, braking systems, lift mechanisms, and safety subsystems
- Utilize CAD tools (e.g., Autodesk Inventor) to develop 3D models, assemblies, and design modifications
- Perform detailed engineering analyses including stress, fatigue, and weld calculations to validate system performance under load
- Establish design criteria, tolerances, and performance requirements aligned with project objectives and safety standards
- Produce, review, and approve engineering drawings and documentation
Technical Leadership & Team Oversight
- Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers on the mechanical team
- Review and approve design work to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to company standards
- Lead technical problem-solving efforts and drive sound engineering decision-making
Project Execution & Coordination
- Manage technical deliverables, schedules, and engineering milestones for assigned projects
- Collaborate with structural, electrical, controls, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure system integration
- Interface with vendors and fabricators to review submittals, resolve technical issues, and maintain design intent
- Support procurement activities including development of technical specifications and evaluations
Analysis, Compliance, and Documentation
- Analyze and document designs for compliance with ASTM standards and applicable codes (e.g., ASTM F24, F2291, F1193)
- Support hazard analyses and risk assessments as part of design validation
- Prepare technical documentation including calculations, reports, and presentations
- Communicate analysis results and recommend design improvements to stakeholders
Manufacturing, Installation, and Field Support
- Provide engineering support during fabrication, assembly, and installation phases of projects
- Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and resolve field issues
- Support testing, commissioning, and site acceptance activities
- Provide technical support to vendors and clients, including occasional travel
Continuous Improvement
- Drive improvements in design processes, standards, and documentation practices
- Contribute to development of reusable engineering standards and system architectures
Reporting Relationship:
- Reports to the Project Managers and/or Project Directors
- Takes direction from the Operations Managers
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Minimum of 6–8 years of experience in mechanical design of complex systems
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D modeling software, MS Office Suite
- Experience performing engineering analyses (stress, fatigue, structural systems)
- Demonstrated ability to lead engineering tasks or small teams
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
Preferred
- Experience in amusement rides or similar high-safety industries
- Familiarity with ASTM F24 standards and hazard analysis methodologies
- Knowledge of steel structures, welding, and mechanical components (motors, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics)
- Experience with FEA, fatigue analysis, and validation testing
- Familiarity with Blender, AutoCAD, MATLAB, Rhino, and Python
- PE license or progress toward licensure
Work Environment
- Remote-based design and engineering work with periodic travel to manufacturing sites and project installations
- Occasional on-site fieldwork supporting construction, installation, and testing activities

Pay: $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
