Duties & Responsibilities:
Reporting to the co-directors of the Institute for Transformative Learning in the Office of the Provost, the part-time program assistant will provide support in coordinating campus-wide experiential learning activities and initiatives at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Advising:
- Conduct one-on-one student advising sessions with undergraduates interested in pursuing research opportunities. Student advising sessions may include educating students on the basics of undergraduate research at VCU; exploring mentors related to students’ interest areas; and guiding students through the process of preparing to engage with faculty research mentors.
- Advise and support SLTAs interested in becoming Advanced SLTAs and Ambassadors to include educating on the SLTA journey and progression, project identification, and management.
- Advise students interested in exploring and engaging with other Transformative Learning opportunities, including VIPs, Service-Learning, and Academic Internships (as needed).
Programming & Outreach:
- Serve as a student-facing representative of Transformative Learning at program activities and outreach events. This may include tabling at student fairs, facilitating open houses, conducting informational meetings, and distributing promotional materials.
- Assist the Coordinator of Service Learning and Coordinator of Undergraduate Research with program activities, outreach, and events, including planning and coordination of Transformative Learning Week, the Annual Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity, and other student presentation events.
- Assist in marketing and promoting Transformative Learning activities to VCU students (both summer and academic year opportunities).
Administrative Support:
- Provides general administrative support for the Institute for Transformative Learning.
- Assists the Coordinator of Service Learning and Coordinator of Undergraduate Research as needed.
- Supports students currently engaged in undergraduate research and service learning with enhanced support and resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work collaboratively with peers, faculty, and staff, and a strong desire to support student success.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and stay organized while balancing multiple priorities.
- Basic proficiency with standard productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace) and virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet).
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as an undergraduate researcher and/or service learning student.
- Experience with peer mentoring and/or advising other undergraduate students.
- Strong writing, public speaking, student engagement skills.
- Interest in academic program management and coordination.
- Willingness to commit to a full academic year with the ability to work up to 20 hours per week
Salary Range: Up to $19 hourly
