Position Summary
Virginia Transformer is seeking an AA Level Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in Rincon, Georgia. This position is ideal for an early-career mechanical engineer with strong technical aptitude who is eager to develop expertise in the design and manufacturing of world-class power transformers.
Working alongside experienced engineering professionals, you will support the mechanical design, documentation, and manufacturing of custom transformer products for utility, renewable energy, industrial, and data center customers.
This role offers significant technical growth, mentorship, and exposure to complex engineered-to-order products.
What You'll Do
· Create and revise mechanical designs and detailed manufacturing drawings using 3D CAD software.
· Develop fabrication, assembly, and production drawings for transformer components.
· Prepare bills of materials (BOMs), engineering documentation, and manufacturing packages.
· Perform mechanical calculations including:
o Structural loading
o Material selection
o Weld design
o Fastener sizing
o Thermal expansion considerations
· Support design reviews and engineering change requests.
· Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Production, Supply Chain, Quality, and Test Engineering teams.
· Assist with root cause investigations and implementation of corrective actions.
· Ensure designs comply with customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on manufacturability, quality, and cost reduction.
· Support prototype development and production implementation.
· Learn transformer design principles through hands-on engineering projects.
QualificationsRequired
· AA degree in Mechanical Engineering.
· 0–3 years of mechanical design experience (internship or co-op experience welcomed).
· Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, Solid Edge, or AutoCAD).
· Understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
· Knowledge of manufacturing processes including fabrication and machining.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
· Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
Preferred
· Experience designing fabricated steel structures or large industrial equipment.
· Exposure to finite element analysis (FEA).
· Knowledge of sheet metal and weldment design.
· Experience with ERP systems and engineering document control.
· Familiarity with electrical equipment or transformer manufacturing.
· Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward licensure.
