Job description
We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Laboratory Supervisor with expertise in Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In this role, you will oversee daily laboratory operations involving ICP-MS instrumentation for elemental and isotopic analysis. The position combines technical knowledge of mass spectrometry with leadership and management responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have experience quantifying metals in complex biological and forensic matrices in a fast paced production environment and will help ensure analytical accuracy, optimize instrument performance, and improve laboratory processes.
Responsibilities
· Laboratory Operations and Instrumentation: Operate and maintain ICP-MS systems to ensure accurate results and reliable performance. Perform routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and document corrective actions as needed. Develop and validate sample preparation methods, including dilute-and-shoot, acid digestion, and microwave digestion, to support testing requirements. Plan work, prioritize tasks, and help meet deadlines under the supervision of the Company President.
· Method Development & Quality Control: Develop, validate, and implement analytical methods that meet client and regulatory requirements. Help create and update quality documentation. Follow company QC procedures to maintain accurate, reliable results. Participate in proficiency testing programs to confirm consistent laboratory performance.
· Supervision & Staff Management: Supervise laboratory analysts and interns, providing training in laboratory safety, sample preparation, instrument operation, and data interpretation. Evaluate staff performance, conduct annual reviews and training sessions, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
· Data Management & Reporting: Manage laboratory data in LIMS and related systems. Review analytical data for anomalies, deviations, and out-of-control results, and take corrective action when needed. Verify that reports are accurate, complete, and compliant with client and regulatory requirements before releasing data to customers.
· Collaboration and Support: Coordinate with other departments to meet project timelines and sample turnaround goals. Work with the Company President to improve laboratory procedures and processes. Serve as the primary point of contact for internal communication within the lab team.
· Safety, Compliance & Facility Management: Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste. Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment. Handle chemicals, solutions, and chemical waste in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and good laboratory practices.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental science, or a related scientific field.
· At least 5 years of professional laboratory experience in analytical testing; trace element or metals testing experience preferred.
· Hands-on experience operating ICP-MS instrumentation.
· Strong understanding of data integrity, traceability, and compliance-focused testing.
· Strong organizational, communication, time-management, and attention-to-detail skills.
· Ability to lift to 35 lbs. and perform routine office tasks, including computer work.
· Proficiency with spreadsheets and written procedures.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
· Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive laboratory tasks.
· Comfort working with acids, reagents, hazardous chemicals, and biological matrices.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in a metals testing laboratory analyzing blood (serum), urine, and hair.
· Proficiency with LIMS software.
· Experience with Syngistix or comparable ICP-MS software.
· Knowledge of sample preparation techniques.
· Familiarity with QA/QC documentation and laboratory accreditation standards.
· At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
Occasional overtime and weekend shifts may be required. Relocation benefits are not available for this position.
