Position Summary
Titomic USA Inc. is seeking an experienced Materials Scientist II to support the development, qualification, and commercialization of advanced cold spray additive manufacturing, repair, and coating technologies. The successful candidate will lead materials development projects, optimize cold spray processes, characterize materials, and support customer applications for aerospace, defense, space, maritime, energy, and industrial markets.
This role is ideal for a materials scientist with several years of industrial or applied research experience who is ready to independently lead technical projects while mentoring junior engineers and scientists.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Materials Development
- Lead the development and qualification of metallic powders and feedstock materials for cold spray applications.
- Evaluate and optimize materials including titanium, aluminum, copper, nickel alloys, stainless steels, high-strength steels, refractory alloys, and specialty materials.
- Develop material property databases and processing guidelines.
- Recommend new materials for additive manufacturing, repair, and protective coating applications.
Cold Spray Process Development
- Develop and optimize cold spray processing parameters.
- Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) to improve process consistency and performance.
- Support the transition of new materials and processes from research into production.
- Troubleshoot process issues and recommend corrective actions.
Materials Characterization
Perform and interpret materials characterization including:
- Optical microscopy
- SEM and EDS
- EBSD (preferred)
- XRD (preferred)
- Microhardness testing
- Tensile testing
- Bond strength testing
- Corrosion evaluation
- Fatigue and wear testing
- Failure analysis
- Metallographic preparation and analysis
Prepare technical reports summarizing test results and recommendations.
Product Development
- Support development of new cold spray systems, consumables, and applications.
- Participate in prototype evaluations and product validation testing.
- Collaborate with engineering teams on equipment improvements and new technology development.
- Assist with qualification of repair procedures for aerospace, defense, and industrial customers.
Customer & Technical Support
- Support customer demonstrations and proof-of-concept projects.
- Provide technical expertise during equipment installations and customer process development.
- Assist customers with process optimization and application development.
- Present technical findings to customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Research & Innovation
- Support internal research and development initiatives.
- Participate in government-funded programs including DoD, NASA, AFRL, NAVSEA, and SBIR/STTR projects.
- Contribute to invention disclosures, patents, and technical publications as appropriate.
- Evaluate emerging materials and manufacturing technologies.
Quality & Compliance
- Develop material specifications, test procedures, and work instructions.
- Support AS9100 quality management system requirements.
- Assist with material qualification documentation and customer acceptance testing.
- Participate in root cause investigations and corrective actions.
Collaboration & Mentorship
- Mentor entry-level materials scientists, interns, and laboratory technicians.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Applications Engineering, Quality, Business Development, and Production teams.
- Support cross-functional continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Security Requirements
- U.S. citizenship without dual citizenship is required.

- Must possess or be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
Preferred
- Master's degree in Materials Science or Metallurgical Engineering.
Experience
- 3–7 years of experience in materials science, metallurgy, thermal spray, additive manufacturing, or related manufacturing environments.
- Experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments.
- Experience with metallic materials characterization and testing.
- Experience preparing technical reports and communicating technical findings.
