Northern New Jersey · National account scope · Primarily On-site + 30% Travel
Full-time · Senior-level (VP) · $200,000–$350,000 base + performance bonus + long-term incentive
Overview:
A major Asia-headquartered property & casualty insurer is building a US High-Tech insurance practice, underwriting risks located across the United States, and is hiring its founding senior technical underwriting advisor. You will be the technical authority on semiconductor fab and hyperscale data-center risks with insured values from $500M to $100B+ per location — authoring the underwriting opinions that drive book quality, defining the technical playbook, and building the risk-engineering function. Note: this is a technical advisory role; final risk acceptance and pricing rest with global head-office underwriting.
Responsibilities:
● Author written technical underwriting opinions on every high-tech submission — risk quality, coverage adequacy, sub-limits, deductibles, and recommended pricing — for final head-office decision.
● Evaluate HPR submissions against recognized engineering standards (FM Global Data Sheets, NFPA 318 for semiconductor cleanrooms, NFPA 75 for data centers).
● Recommend technical pricing using internal loss-cost models and RMS/AIR NatCat output; monitor PML and catastrophe accumulation across the book.
● Advise on layered program structuring (primary and excess towers to $1B+) and coordinate with specialty lines (Cyber, Tech E&O, Environmental).
● Draft proprietary manuscript wordings — cleanroom contamination, fab-tool moveable property, semiconductor BI/CBI, thermal-runaway and GPU breakdown extensions.
● Build and lead the US technical underwriting and risk-engineering team over the next five years.
Requirements:
● 12–15+ years of commercial property/specialty underwriting, including 6+ years on large-property HPR risks ($500M+ TIV).
● Senior/Lead Underwriter or Technical Advisor role at a Tier-1 carrier (Chubb, Zurich NA, AXA XL, FM Global, AIG, Allianz Commercial, Liberty Mutual GRS, Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, BHSI), with direct experience in at least one complex-property vertical.
● Track record issuing technical underwriting opinions on risks at $50M+ net / $1B+ gross TIV (direct binding authority is not required).
● Expert command of HPR engineering principles, NatCat modeling (RMS/AIR), and BI/CBI valuation methodology.
● Ability to draft manuscript wordings and interact with state DOI and surplus-lines regulators.
● Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
● Ability to operate independently and hands-on while building a new practice within an established branch.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Prior experience writing major semiconductor or hyperscale/data-center accounts.
● Adjacent complex-property verticals — battery, electronics, automotive, industrial manufacturing, or construction.
● Construction and builder's risk underwriting expertise (CAR/EAR, project-specific placements).
● MBA, CPCU, ARM, or P.E. license.
● Background standing up a new underwriting team, admitted (COA) filings, or an E&S / surplus-lines launch.
● Strong links with reinsurers and brokers in the US, London, and Bermuda markets.
