Systems Engineer / IT Technician (MSP)
Client Environment Owner
Computer Engineering Group · Napa, CA · Full-time, on-site · $35–45/hour DOE · Growth opportunity
About the role
Computer Engineering Group is a managed IT services provider (MSP) supporting small businesses across the Napa Valley. We're hiring a systems engineer / IT technician to take ownership of the technical health of a group of client networks — typically 20 to 100 users each.
This is a hands-on technical role, not sales and not customer success. We have a proven technology roadmap that defines where a healthy client environment should be. Your job is to get to know each client's environment, then propose, plan, and execute the projects that bring it into alignment with that roadmap — and do the hands-on build and configuration work yourself.
You won't be doing it alone. You'll be backed by experienced management, a dedicated account management team that owns the client relationship, and a senior engineer to learn from and escalate to. This is a genuine growth opportunity: a chance for a capable tech to step into real environment ownership with the structure and support to succeed at it.
What you'll do
- Take ownership of the technical health of a handful of small-business client networks (20–100 users each).
- Assess each environment against CEG's standard technology roadmap and identify the gaps.
- Propose, plan, and execute the projects that bring each client into alignment — firewall and network deployments (UniFi / SonicWALL / Meraki), site-to-site and client VPN, VLAN segmentation, Entra ID and Microsoft 365 migrations, Intune/Autopilot device rollouts, backup/DR, and security cleanup.
- Do the hands-on build, configuration, and troubleshooting day to day.
- Serve as the escalation point for the tougher, environment-specific issues on your accounts (not the routine ticket queue), with a senior engineer above you when you need one.
- Work alongside the account management team, who handle the client relationship and approvals so you can focus on the technical work.
What we're looking for
- 2–4 years in an MSP, IT services, or business IT environment, with real hands-on infrastructure work.
- Networking: hands-on with business firewalls and switching — configuring firewall rules, VLANs, DHCP/DNS, and VPN (site-to-site and client). We run UniFi, SonicWALL, and Meraki day to day; deep experience in any one and willingness to learn the others is what matters.
- Entra ID / Microsoft 365: managing users, groups, and licensing; Entra ID join; SSO and MFA/Conditional Access; and troubleshooting sign-in and access issues. Exposure to Azure (VMs, basic resource management) and Purview/compliance is a plus.
- Intune / endpoint management: enrolling and provisioning devices through Intune and Autopilot, pushing configuration and app policies, Company Portal, and Windows/Apple device management (Apple Business Manager a plus).
- Windows Server, Active Directory, and backup/DR fundamentals.
- Ready to take responsibility for client environments and plan work that holds up — and eager to grow into it with support.
- Able to explain technical issues to non-technical business owners without the jargon.
- Experience with PSA/RMM and documentation tools (ConnectWise, IT Glue/Hudu, or similar) is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to local client sites.
Nice to have
- RMM/automation tooling (Rewst or equivalent) and network monitoring (Auvik or similar).
- Certifications: Microsoft (MD-102, Azure/M365), CompTIA Network+/Security+.
- Experience with wine, hospitality, agriculture, or nonprofit clients.
Why this is a growth opportunity
- A clear roadmap to work toward, so you're never guessing what “good” looks like.
- A senior engineer and experienced management to learn from and lean on.
- An account team that handles the client relationship and sales side, so your energy stays on the technology.
- Real ownership of environments and projects, with room to grow into deeper technical leadership as you prove yourself.
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance — CEG covers 50% of the employee premium to start (coverage begins the first of the month after 60 days), stepping up with tenure: the company covers 99% of the employee premium after 2 years, and 99% of employee + family coverage after 5 years.
- Retirement plan — 2% company contribution of your annual earnings.
- Paid time off — vacation that accrues faster with tenure, 40 hours of paid sick leave per year, plus 8 paid holidays.
- On-call stipend — when you're in the on-call rotation.

This role is NOT
- A sales or account-management role — you make the technical case, you don't chase leads or carry a quota.
- A Tier 1 helpdesk seat — routine tickets live with the helpdesk.
- A desk-only advisory role — expect to be hands-on in environments every day.
