Essential Functions

· Direct and coordinate the chancel choir and handbell choir.

· Work closely with the accompanists providing music selections well in advance of their rehearsal and performance by the choir.

· Establish a worshipful, positive feeling and movement in the worship service through the selection of music appropriate for the worship themes and seasons; actively engaging the congregation during worship through music.

· Collaborate with the pastor to select congregational music for worship services.

· Lead congregational singing, directing hymns and Chancel Choir anthems for the Sunday morning traditional worship service.

· Select chancel and handbell choir anthem music that provides a variety of music ensuring coordination with the liturgical calendar and, when possible, follows the theme or sermon of the worship service.

· Promote growth and stability of the choirs and development of musical skills through rehearsals and coaching.

· Schedule and lead rehearsals with the choirs weekly and at additional times as identified by special needs.

· Select and arrange for musical presentations at additional services during Holy Week, Easter cantata and Advent/Christmas cantata.

· Coordinate activities with the pastor, pianist/organist, and staff.

· Collaborate with church staff and lay leaders to ensure music ministries are fully integrated into the life of the church

Administration

· Purchase music and related supplies within budget allocations.

· Administer and maintain a music library and other materials related to the choirs including the safe handling of the handbells and maintaining an orderly music room.

· Provides leadership skills with a knack for enlisting, developing, and inspiring volunteers and an ability to communicate effectively with others on the staff and in the congregation

Necessary Attributes

· Bachelor’s degree with music major/minor or equivalent experience.

· Knowledge of music with an emphasis on church music and the ability to teach choral and handbell music to others.

· Familiarity with the United Methodist music and worship tradition.

· High level of overall musicianship is required. Additional instrumental skills are desired.

· Positive, enthusiastic interpersonal skills are essential.

· Understanding and full support of the ministry, mission, values, beliefs and goals of the St. John’s United Methodist Church

Additional Information

· The position of Traditional Music Director is a part-time, salaried position and the salary is based upon a projected 10 hours per week. The actual number of hours required during any given week are those needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

· The ability to work extended hours during important church seasons such as Christmas and Easter is required.

· Physical Demands: Must be able to climb stairs and lift small boxes and/or equipment up to 25 lbs.

· Compensation: Dependent on experience
