Opening Hook
You're not afraid of heights.
Not just literally, though that matters here, but the kind of person who sees a challenge above the horizon and climbs toward it anyway. You don't wait for someone to hand you a ladder. You find one, check it, and go.
Maybe you've been doing cable runs, residential installs, or telecom work, and you're good at it, but the company you're with is treating you like a warm body with a toolkit. You show up, knock out the list, come home. Repeat. No one asks your opinion. No one invests in your growth. The work isn't hard; it's just... small.
Or maybe you're newer to the field, and you've got the itch; you want hands-on work that actually builds something, not just a job that checks boxes until something better comes along.
Here's what we know: the people who thrive at Xiber are wired differently. They want to understand why something works, not just how to replace it. They care whether the resident on the third floor actually has a reliable connection when they drive away. They take pride in a clean install. And when something isn't right, they don't leave it half-done.
If that's you, keep reading. We've been looking for you.
Your Problems Solved
As Xiber's Field Technician, you're not inheriting someone else's mess; you're building the network from the ground up.
Your primary mission: install and activate Xiber's fiber optic, PON, Active Ethernet, and Ethernet over Coax systems across our growing Midwest portfolio. That means running cable, mounting equipment, terminating connections, testing circuits, and handing residents a working, fast, reliable internet connection on day one. You'll commission new multifamily properties, get them live, and make sure everything is clean, documented, and done right.
As our network matures, you'll grow into break/fix work alongside your installs, diagnosing service issues, replacing failed equipment, and keeping the network performing at the standard you helped build. This isn't the other way around: we're not throwing you at tickets from day one. We're investing in your craft first.
What this looks like in practice: you're based out of our Carmel, IN headquarters, working alongside a crew of installation technicians who've got your back. Work is assigned and coordinated as a team; you're not out there figuring it out solo. You'll build relationships with property managers who'll come to trust you as a technical partner, not just a vendor. And as you grow into break/fix work, you'll take on more independence in the field, backed by a network engineering team on call when things get complex.
One more thing: if you're comfortable climbing towers or willing to get there, you'll unlock a part of this role that most field techs never see. We support fixed wireless infrastructure in addition to our fiber buildout, and the technicians willing to go vertical with us are the ones who grow fastest. Tower climbing certification is a significant plus, or the grit to earn it.

Soft Skills
You're the kind of person who can walk into a property on opening day, construction dust still settling, property manager on edge, residents moving in, and bring calm, competence, and confidence to the chaos. You explain what you're doing and why in language that doesn't require a networking degree to understand. You work quickly but with attention to detail, and you've got enough self-awareness to know the difference.
You're self-directed. You don't need a supervisor to tell you to show up on time, document your work, or follow up when something seems off. You manage your own day because you take ownership of your results, not because someone's watching.
You're also honest. When something doesn't work, you say so. When you need backup, you ask. Xiber's network engineers are there for a reason, and the best field technicians know the line between resourcefulness and stubbornness.
And you're mindful. You're working in people's homes and communities. You treat every property and every resident's space with the same care you'd want someone to bring into yours.
Technical Skills
You bring hands-on experience with telecom installation, ISP fieldwork, structured cabling, or similar technical roles. You understand networking fundamentals, IP addressing, VLANs, basic Layer 2/3 concepts, and you're comfortable working with fiber optic systems, PON technology, and coaxial distribution infrastructure. You know how to terminate, test, and certify connections using professional-grade tools, and you document your work clearly enough that the next person in doesn't have to guess what you did.
Experience with PON/GPON, XGS-PON, or Active Ethernet in multifamily environments is a strong plus. Familiarity with Ethernet over Coax (MoCA) technologies and fiber splicing and testing skills (OTDR, power meters, VFL) all make you stand out. CompTIA Network+ demonstrates that you take your craft seriously.
Tower climbing certification, or the willingness to get certified, is a significant differentiator for this role. If you've worked on towers, rooftops, or aerial infrastructure and you're not afraid of heights, say so in your application. That's not a nice-to-have for us. It's a pathway to expanded responsibility and faster growth.
You're physically capable of lifting 50+ pounds, working in equipment rooms, basements, rooftops, and mechanical spaces, and spending most of your day on your feet and in motion. A valid driver's license with a clean record is required.
Must Haves
You need at least one year of hands-on experience in telecom installation, ISP field work, structured cabling, or a similar role, where you've terminated real connections, tested real circuits, and faced real problems with real consequences. A solid grasp of networking fundamentals and hands-on experience with fiber-optic systems or structured cabling is non-negotiable.
You must be a clear, professional communicator, not just with your team, but with property managers and residents who need to understand what's happening without getting a technical lecture. You need to be self-directed enough to own a territory, plan your days, and stay organized without constant supervision. And you need to care about the quality of your work, not just whether the light is green, but whether the install will still be solid six months from now.
A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and willingness to travel (primarily day travel, occasional overnights) are required. Physical readiness for ladder work, rooftop access, and equipment rooms is a must.
If you're not afraid of heights and have, or are willing to earn, tower climbing certification, move yourself to the top of the list.
What We Provide
About Xiber
Xiber is a fast-growing Midwest internet service provider delivering high-speed fiber and fixed wireless connectivity to apartment communities, condominiums, and commercial properties across the region. We're building the network infrastructure that keeps thousands of residents connected to work, school, and each other, and we're doing it with a team that takes that mission personally.
Our field technicians aren't interchangeable parts. They're the ones who actually deliver on the promise we make to every property we sign. When you do your job well, families stay connected. Students get to class. People keep their jobs. That's not abstract; it's the direct result of a cable you ran and a connection you tested.
We're growing fast, which means the technicians who build their skills and prove their judgment now are the ones moving into senior technical roles, field leadership, and operations as we expand. This isn't a job to hold you over. It's the start of something.
The people at Xiber bring grit; they hold steadfast when a job gets complicated, a property is difficult, or a problem doesn't have an obvious answer. They're nimble, ready to learn a new technology, adapt to a new property type, or change their approach when the situation calls for it. They're xealous, they bring energy to the work, even the unsexy parts, because they understand that every task done well is a reflection of the team. They're mindful; they think before they act, they treat teammates and residents with respect, and they communicate before problems become crises. And every day, they win the day; they make the most of their hours, their territory, and their opportunity.
If that sounds like you, we'd like to meet.
